Is this setup possible??

Go to solution Solved by jaslion,

Get a long usb cabke and a long hdmi cable (fibre for bith if you have to) and skip thunderbolt. Desktop usb c doesnt carry ANY video from your gpununless it has a passthrough port and there are no new cards that have that.

Even linus only uses his thunderbolt dock as a fancy usb hub. The display out has also been replaced by a directional dp port cable.

Bonus is its gonna be A TON cheaper just using 2 cables than having to do a fiber optic thunderbolt setup (thats 1000$+ at the minimum). That and honestly the usb + hdmi cable route is basically always the better option

So your list:

1. Yes but its better to do as I said above. It can work if you have the exact right hardware

2.Use displayfusion irs gonna save a lot of headaches

3. Yes thunderbolt or usb cabe would just be a usb hub/port for the system

4. Dpport and hdmi carry audio. Arc is possible but you can just run a audio cable too. Plenty of options here.

5. Better and cheaper to do a usb, hdmi and if needed audio run on their own. Much much cheaper too also not stuck with proprietart tech. Bonus here is too that your pc hardware isnt factored into the compatibility list. All you need is the ports instead of having a specific hardware combi

Inspired by Linus's thunderbolt "send everything over one fibre cable" setup, I was wondering if something like the attached drawing is even possible?

What I seek: I would like to be able to use the PC situated in my office as an optional HT/Gaming PC in my living room without have to move the box and peripherals (i.e. have a second set of peripherals in the living room).  There's significant distance between my office and the living room.

Edit: Oh forgot to say, please ignore the fact that I can use steam link in some form or way.  I would like this to be as if my PC is present and directly connected to the TV.

My concerns/questions:

  1. Am I understanding the use of thunderbolt correctly? Can this work?
  2. How would you switch between the PC monitors and the TV.  Is it as simple as using the Multiple Displays configuration tool in Windows?
  3. Can peripherals be plugged in in both areas at once?
  4. How would I get audio to the TV? (or soundbar if that's possible)
  5. Is there a better way? 🙂

Thanks for your time!

@jaslion thanks for the detailed reply!

Why exactly did you mention this part:

Your suggestions make a lot of sense.
Optical HDMI seems fairly abundant but USB over optical?  Isn't that just the corning cable he uses?  Are there cheaper alternatives you're referring to?

His first setup is the thunderbolt fibre cable with docks. Thats still in use. The corning cable is for something else if I remember corectly.

Depending on how far you need to go a simple active usb cable or that + a repeater can do the trick.

The usb c part I meant thunderbolt. Thunderbolt on desktop does NOT carry video unless there is either a gpu doing passthrough to it (usb cfrom the gpu to a card) or it is using a igpu connection. The usb c thingy hasnt been done since the rtx2000 series and adapting a dp port or hdmi to usb c and then to a thunderbolt connection is very very very hit or miss

The device Linus currently uses is this fiber extender for USB, if this helps at all.

Fun fact I played an entire Witcher 3 playthrough sitting on my couch streaming it to my TV using on of those. Wifi, too. I was impressed with the little thing.
