Freezing and then black screen. Looking for answers.

JPhi

Hello, all.

I started running into an issue with my PC about a few weeks ago. It works like a dream most of the time, but, every once in a while, it'll completely freeze for about 10 seconds before going to a black screen. My monitor is still getting signal, but the screen is black. Once this happens, it seems I can't do anything to get out of it except by using the power button. I'm quite frustrated since this is a relatively new computer I built in 2021.

The first few times, it would freeze while trying to open VALORANT. The last few times have been seemingly unrelated to the game: it froze three times in a row the other day directly after logging in (on three separate reboots), and it happened again today while browsing the web.

Here's what I've done so far:

  • Uninstalled and reinstalled VALORANT.
  • Added VALORANT and its related applications to my antivirus' whitelist (I use Webroot).
  • Monitored CPU temps.
  • Ran a Windows Memory Diagnostic.
  • Ran chkdsk.

None of these have seemed to help, so I'm hoping someone can give me a hand. Here's my build:

OS: Windows 10, 64-bit

BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. F11, 12/31/2020

Motherboard: Gigabyte B550 AORUS Elite V2
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700G with Radeon Graphics
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB DDR4
SSD: SAMSUNG (MZ-V8V1TOB/AM) 980 SSD
PSU: Corsair RM Series, RM750
(no GPU)

Try the following to rule out some issues.

Open Command Prompt using Run as Administrator

Type the command: sfc /scannow

Wait for the results, if any corruption found try the following sequence of commands:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Restart your machine then repeat the steps for sfc /scannow.

That seems to have done something! sfc /scannow found corrupted files and fixed them. Interestingly, the screen froze and went black, but then turned back on when it was completing the operation. The other commands completed successfully as well. I also re-downloaded the latest AMD Radeon Graphics drivers using AMD's software. No freezing yet, but I haven't been on since yesterday, so I'll give an update if something happens.

  • 2 weeks later...

Okay, so there's been some development. The screen continues to freeze sometimes, but it recovers itself instead of just staying black. Whenever it happens, I get the attached pop-up.
