i3 12100 or i5 11400

Just get the 12100. 11th gen was bad when it released and is a dead end.

Personally I wouldn't buy a i5 11400 because of it being a cpu for a dead platform
I3 12100 would be better for gaming because of higher single core performance
Personally I would go with a i5 12400F

CPU= I5 12400F
RAM = 2x 32gb DDR4 3200MHZ Corsair Vengeance LPX
Motherboard = MSI Z690-A-PRO Wifi DDR4
GPU= RTX 3050
SSD = Samsung 980 Pro 1TB
PSU= Corsair RM750

Laptop:
CPU= AMD Ryzen 5 5500u
RAM= 1X 4gb (soldered 3200mhz), 1x 16gb ddr4 3200mhz (so-dimm)
SSD= Samsung 970 Evo 1TB

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

performance wise they're neck-and-neck 

but personally i wouldn't invest any money in a dead platform which won't have any new chips

if it was useful give it a like :) btw if your into linux pay a visit here
