I am building a pc which I will use for a loooooong time and I don't know how much Ram I will need given that ideal ram capacity doubles every few years. I plan on using this pc till 2030 and my motherboard has 4 ram slots so please share how much Ram you thing will be ideal. Pc requirements- average gamer

Just in case please do not tell me that this pc will be obsolete in 2030, i currently use a duel core processer from 2012 so I will be fine .

I would suggest you get 2x 8GB now and add 2 additional 8GB sticks if you need to.

Depending on the pricing you might want to get 2x 16GB right away.

Personally I run 2x 16GB aswell, but my RAM rarely reaches 16GB utilization.

You could have said that about 4gb ram in 2014(one decade ago) and i plan on using this pc for a decade so will I need 4 times the current ideal capacity?(16*4 = 64gb?)

I would go for 2x16 In a 4 slot motherboard, this gives you room for expansion based on actual need in stead of a speculative future you have no control over.

32 GB will last you a long time for the average gamer, and a decade down the road who knows what will happen? maybe your system breaks before that and you will have to upgrade anyways, or maybe your life situation changes and you dont have any time for gaming.

DDR4 are on its last leg as it is. So if you go for that now, and should decide to upgrade the cpu some years down the line you may have to get new RAM anyways.

If you want me to answer, please use the quote function or tag me. I dont get notified unless you do

I would go with 64gb (16x4) ddr4 at a around 4000mhz or 32gb (2x16gb) of ddr5 since you're planning on using it for a long time. That's what i would do so please dont attack me

I agree, but also not. There's the point you shouldn't overspend first time, but rather upgrade over time following you needs and demands

I run 64gigs of ram for video editing and 3d content.

But best is 3600Mhz 32GB as of that matches the AMD Infinity fabric better than 4000Mhz if you go AMD ofcourse

Depends on your workload. I always max out my 16GB, often crash and get funny visual bugs due to not having enough ram. I'll go 64GB next time but if you're just a casual gamer, 16GB should be enough.

32GB maybe to "future proof" but I doubt that's needed. The industry is moving to fast, direct storage and it feels like ram is just a nice thing to have, that the priority should be your SSD speed for games. Unless your game is modded Cities Skylines. That game definitely needs 64GB as a minimum, recommended 128GB.

Intel 12th gen can only support a max of 3600mhz with over clocking but I will run it at 3200mhz just because I like my pc more than tinkering with my pc(maybe someday when I am upgrading or bored i will over clock) and for now 64gb is not needed for now

I am not planning to fully upgrade( both Mobo and processer) in a long time so ram is going to be a need to have for me for a long time.

I know ddr5 costs half the price of a decent pc like 2 years ago but since he is going to have it for a long time dont you think getting ddr5 now is better??

ohhh youre using an intel cpu, yeah then theres no point in getting a 4000mhz ram kit. Also im pretty sure overclocking your pc hardware reduces life span so since you want them to last long dont over clock but if you really do want to just overclock it a tiny lil bit

Nah not really, as of DDR5 is adopters hardware so it's fairly expensive as of like only a few percent has aquired it by this time.
