Asus z690-e and 3090ti not running at PCIE 5.0 x16 or 8x

Darkkenrahl

Hey all,

I just recently built a new rig and I am having difficulty getting the GPU to run in full pcie 5.0 8x.

I know that pcie bandwidth is limited if I have an M2 in the M2_1 slot, and I also know that at times my GPU may not necessarily run at the full bandwidth due to power saving features. I just wanted to post here to get an additional opinion on if something is wrong if my gpu fluctuates between 3.0 at 8x, 4.0 at 4x, as well as 4.0 at 8x. I’ve seen all 3 depending on when I boot my machine. But I’ve never seen it run at 5.0 8x even though this is a pcie 5.0 card. GPU feels fully installed in the lane and the latch for the lane also indicates it’s secured in the lane.

I’ve posted the current readout from Gpu-z

My specs:

i7-12700k

64gb Corsair dominator platinum 5200mhz

rtx 3090ti

corsair hx1200i psu

Asus ROG Z690-e

4tb M.2 (top slot)

Win 11-64 bit

Thanks in advance!

So for starters, the 3090Ti isn't even a PCIe 5.0 device, it uses 4.0. No matter what you do, you will not see GPU-Z indicate it using 5.0. That being said, GPU-Z reports the currently active link state. So if you're not doing anything intensive, it should fall to a lower link speed (my 1070 is sitting at PCIe 1.1 x16 right now, supposedly). If you launch the render test using the question mark symbol next to the link speed, you should see it bump up to 4.0 x16.

Not that any of this is anything to worry about really, I have never seen link speed issues with PCs in my time with them.

I did launch the GPU-z render test and it does stay at 4.0 @ 4x. When I load BIOS it also says the lane is running at 4x.

I know I can’t run at the full x16 if I have an M2 in the z690-e top M2_1 slot as this shares bandwidth with the GPU so it will automatically limit down to 8x at best.

But I was concerned that something was damaged or not operating properly since the render test did not bump the lane speed.

That is a little odd but frankly I wouldn't worry about it too much. If your card seems to perform similarly to other ones online, all is well. Worse comes to worse you could reseat it and see if that helps.

Thanks. It did feel snug in the case and didn’t feel crooked, but that may be worth a shot. This is what I am showing when running Diablo 3 or other games at 4k.

Sometimes it will run in 8x other times it will not.
