Im not on a budget for this, Im happy to get the best, but what is the best for my hardware?
I'm want to run an i5 12600K or KF , 2070 Super, GSkill Trident 3600 DDR4, 2x SSD M.2
I also don't want overkill where its not necessary.

Here my first thoughts:

MSI PRO B660M-A

MSI MAG B660 TOMAHAWK WIFI DDR4

Any real life experience appreciated?

You need to make a list based on the features you want on the motherboard, the price you're willing to pay, and then look at reviews and comparatives on the internet to figure out what's best.

Hardware Unboxed and Level1Techs Youtube channels are two that did reviews of B660 motherboards

I strongly suggest watching Level1Techs video below first, it explains very well why the VRM quality matters and how some motherboards may prevent your cpu from working at 100%.

Am also thinking of getting a 12600K for my son, and not sure about if I could choose a B660 or Z690 mobo.. I've been an AMD guy for some years and don't rly know what limitations a B660 will have, given that I don't plan to OC the CPU (just getting E cores is good in itself vs a 12400) ?

My first though was a Z690 also, but many recommendations for the 660/670 as it is enough, it also depends if you want to OC your cpu, you can only do that on the Z690>
You can also get the 12600KF, its cheaper.
