Frankenstein GPU solution

Guest

In this LTT video they talk about frankenstein GPU cooling, which they conclude isn't really worth it, but I'm in a different situation. In my last post, I talked about buying a 3090, but just the PCB.

People told me to not do it since a 3080 isnt that much more expensive, which would perform just as well, but I managed to get my hands on a really cheap ($75) Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 4, with the 2 fans (which I'm going to sell since I already have extras).

Now the main issue is VRMs. Linus used a (aluminum?) heatsink and some thermal adhesive. But he also said it's not effective permanently. What is a more permanent solution? And what are good quality, cheap heatsinks? And finally, where do I NEED to put them on the board? Thanks!

Heatsinks are not the problem, issue is lack of airflow to have them effectively cool. You also have make sure you are putting just enough pressure on the GPU die and backplate otherwise you will crack your GPU die, crack your PCB OR cause your GPU to seperate from PCB.

Overall this is not just just slap a CPU cooler on it and use it type of situation, I dealt with direct-die previously I personally would have picked 3080 instead.

Hi there, for VRM i would use something like these:

Problem is as Levent said: Airflow.

if i recall correctly, the Vrm get very toasty on these things so you need to attach them with a good heat transfer aswell.

difficult, but fun project.

CPU: AMD R7 5800X3D GPU: Powercolor 6950XT Liquid Devil Board: MSI MPG X570 Gaming Edge Wifi Ram: 64GB Corsair Vengeance LPX Black DDR4-3200 CL16 PSU: Seasonic Prime PX-1000 Case: BeQuiet! Dark Base Pro 900 Rev. 2 Cooling: Aquacomputer OCTO-Fancontroller, Custom loop with a 420 45mm Alphacool Radiator in the case, one external. D5 Pump, 9x BeQuiet! Silent Wings 3 140mm High Speed PWM

and don't forget the 3090 has RAM modules on both sides of the PCB

With all the Trolls, Try Hards, Noobs and Weirdos around here you'd think i'd find SOMEWHERE to fit in!

with the cooler I will have sideways airflow, which should flow through the heatsinks. If not, I'll attach another fan I guess.

ya, I'll put some heatsinks on the back too. Do you know of any good thermal tape/adhesive?
