Need AMD CPU recommendation for Minecraft server

Go to solution Solved by GamGrime69,

5600x. You'd probably be fine with a quad core since minecraft server is so single threaded, but amd unfortunately doesn't have any good quad cores right now.

Intel would be better with something like a 12600k but you already have the board so I get not wanting to go for that

Hey there,

I'm planning on fully putting my MC server on some dedicated hardware so my main desktop can actually take a break for once in a week XD

I need some CPU recommendations for the server. It's not a bungee cord server, so I think it'll only use the lone thread really, but I'm not really sure, it's just a SMP.

It'll need to be able a ton of redstone stuff in game, needs to be able to handle a ton of plugins at it and that's basically it. It'll host around a maximum of 20 players, but I'd like it to actually be able to handle around 60 just in case, giving some headroom in the future before needing an upgrade. I'll also need it to handle a minimum of 3200Mhz RAM, minimum 4 slots in dual channel configs as that is what my spare motherboard has, and I'd like to allocate as much RAM as possible to it, so unfortunately I can't run this on an Athlon 3000G.

So yeah, what kind of AMD recommendations do you guys have?

Socket: AM4
Budget: $400 AUD

Note: 32GB of 3200Mhz RAM will be used.

Thanks,

Eli

Minecraft server isn't particularly intensive. You'd honestly be better off going Intel for the single threaded performance

CPU: Core i9 12900K || CPU COOLER : Corsair H100i Pro XT || MOBO : ASUS Prime Z690 PLUS D4 || GPU: PowerColor RX 6800XT Red Dragon || RAM: 4x8GB Corsair Vengeance (3200) || SSDs: Samsung 970 Evo 250GB (Boot), Crucial P2 1TB, Crucial MX500 1TB (x2), Samsung 850 EVO 1TB || PSU: Corsair RM850 || CASE: Fractal Design Meshify C Mini || MONITOR: Acer Predator X34A (1440p 100hz), HP 27yh (1080p 60hz) || KEYBOARD: GameSir GK300 || MOUSE: Logitech G502 Hero || AUDIO: Bose QC35 II || CASE FANS : 2x Corsair ML140, 1x BeQuiet SilentWings 3 120 ||

I run spigot on an FX8350, and TBQH it's my 4gig of memory that's the issue (starts swapping when the kids roam too far, and seems like java leaks like a sieve), but spigot will get ~700% cpu usage on initialisation, sits around 80-120% with no active users.

If I had the choice I'd store the world files on an SSD too.

The 5600X seems pretty good, might get that one.

Yeah, was thinking about going intel because it's single core, but man, having to buy an entirely new board and all kinda sucks XD

Cheers! 😄

Yeah, was going to go intel, but then I looked at my wallet and it cried when I told it that we might need a new motherboard, so I said to it it's okay, and that we'll just get a new CPU instead.

Looking into the FX8350 and it seems pretty good, but unfortunately doesn't meet the specs that I wanted, mostly being the DDR3 and the socket type, which means I'd need to find a new mobo.

Good setup still though! 😄

Currently running it on a HDD that's a non-boot drive, but definitely looking to get a second NVMe for the server specifically since /tpr takes a bit of a while XD
