Working outside with the nice weather? How can i accomplish this?

Hello Everyone 🙂

Thank you for taking your time to read this, looking for some general advice on how to accomplish this.

As last october i spent quite some on a good gaming PC which i also use for my regular work. Now what i want to do is get some cable and run it outside from my office where i can then plug in a monitor and mouse and keyboard to sit outside with the great weather we are having in the Netherlands.

I remembered a video on LTT where they daisy chained cables together without any real loss in latency i believe. But then how would i accomplish the video signal + keyboard and mouse without running 3 cables.

Anyone with great ideas on how i can accomplish this?

Max lenght is about 20-25 meters if i run a cable.

Kind Regards,

Koen

Linus (and I for that matter, cause I'm just as cool of a dude, lol) did this with a optical Thunderbolt 3 cable.
But this is very expensive, as you'll need the following:

  • Thunderbolt 3 Hub (200+ €)
  • Thunderbolt 3 Optical Cable (10-50 meters) (350 - 500€)
  • Thunderbolt enabled motherboard (+100 € TB3 PCI-e add-in card)

Because it is so expensive, I instead recommend you to get yourself a good quality long HDMI cable (up to 20meters is usually fine, then it becomes expensive) and a really long USB cable, including a powered USB Hub that you connect to that cable, to which you then connect your mouse, keyboard and whatever else you need.

It is important to note, that long USB and HDMI / DisplayPort cables always have the tendency to cause issues, because of signal loss. That's why it is important to get really good quality cables (for example from Lindy) and depending on the length they might need to be actively powered to extend the signal.

Edit:
Or just do what Kilrah said. Way easier and cheaper.

(Because my ego is way too large, I have to mention that did the optical Thunderbolt 3 cable thing first. S*ck it Linus!)

I don't think you can unless you shell out on a new monitor(and possibly motherboard if it doesn't have Thunderbolt) with docking capabilities.

My HP E24d can be used as a dock, it has 4 USB ports and it can be connected with a single thunderbolt cable to a computer. Then, you can plug in your peripherals to the monitor itself.

I am getting pretty fucking sick and tired of the "watch something else" responses. It's such a cop out answer because you could say that about basically anything, and it doesn't address the actual complaints. People use it as some kind of card they pull when they can't actually respond to the criticism raised but they still feel like they need to defend some company/person. If you don't like this thread then stop reading it. See how stupid it is? It's basically like telling someone "shut the fuck up". It's not a clever responsive, it doesn't address anything said, and it is rude.

Honestly that is the best idea.
Didn't think of that myself and tried to complicate things again. Must be my German way of thinking! 😁

Thanks for the input!

My PC does not have an motherboard that supports thunderbolt unfortunately. (ASUS ROG STRIX X570-E GAMING)

I guess easiest is indeed to just move the PC outside.

Any good suggestions on a monitor that is bright for outside and against those reflections?

How does an entire gaming PC works on the open air in a warm spring day? Does insects get attracted too from RGBs?

it should work very well unless it rains or it's to humid.  You could turn off the RGB if it becomes a problem.

I live in misery USA. my timezone is central daylight time which is either UTC -5 or -4 because the government hates everyone.

into trains? here's the model railroad thread!

When do you consider it to humid for a PC?
