PSU PCI-e connectors (split)

I just saw Linus's video on the R9 295X2, and he said something that caught my attention;

he mentioned that the PCI-e connectors had to be set up in a specific way, not using the chained cables.

 

So...unless otherwise stated, is it even OK to assume that GPUs requiring two 6-pins/6-pin & 8-pin/two 8-pins can use one connector per card?

I have a Corsair AX850, and it ultimately has 4x 6+2 pins. Without much doubt, I'm sure this PSU can handle two mid-range or mid-high GPUs in SLI/CrossfireX.

However, I don't think this PSU could handle high-end, power-hungry cards in SLI/CrossfireX.

 

Is this issue of PCI-e cable splitting something to be worried about?

i think what you mean is you only use on of the connectors per card, i dont think you can use only one of the pci power and you can cf/sli any single gpu card on that psu

Most cables have two 8 pins on one cable it is recommended to use 2 seperate cables.

If you have a good like real good high quality psu you should be fine but this card can pull lot's of amps on a single rail.

Yeah you should be fine I ran a oced 7970 on a crappy non certified 450w psu for 1,5 year with no problems.

Lol, it was  some junk psu from dell but it worked fine for 1,5 year with a 7970 and now it's in my backup pc.
