There are instructions on the EVGA websites, but more or less yeah.

So, im about to purchase a second hand Z170 motherboard, and the guy has said that he has updated the BIOS to the latest version. Ive asked him whether that version will support 6th or 7th Intel, however i thought id come on here and ask aswell. If i buy a CPU that doesnt fit the BIOS version, how will i know and how do iknow which bios version to change to, because the EVGA website is poo and doesnt say what gen intel CPU it supports. This might sound like a dumb few questions, however ive never done this and its part of a project im currently working on.

Thanks in advance

George

It would be great to tell us WHICH Z170 motherboard you bought, and WHICH CPU are you attempting to use with it.

Generally, a newer BIOS would not drop support for previously supported CPUs.

It would add additional support for more CPUs.

Say.... BIOS version 3.00 supported all 6th CPUs.

And they rolled out BIOS version 4.00 the support the 7th Gen CPUs.

Then they rolled out BIOS version 4.50, 5.00 ..... and eventually 8.00.

4.00 and onwards would support both 6th and 7th Gen.

Did the seller tell you which CPU he/she was using with the motherboard?

If he/she had a 7th Gen in there, you should be good to go....for the most part.

Would probably help knowing what model of motherboard you are trying to buy to know what you could do about it.

Sorry forgot to mention that part, its an EVGA Z170 Stinger Mini ITX, and i was eithet gonna go for one of these 4, Intel i5-6600k, i5-7600, i5-7600k, i7-6700k.

The 6700K and 6600K will definitely work. If it was updated to BIOS version 2.0 and later, it'll support 7th gen CPUs and 6th gen.

If you throw a 7th gen in and it's still on BIOS version 1.x, it will just not POST and the POST code will say 00 or some other CPU initialization error like 0d.
