Budget (including currency): £1,500

Country: United Kingdom

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Data Developer (Python, Power BI, Hyper-V running 1-2 Linux VMs) + Gaming (Strategy Games and random AAA games)

Other details:

I have mainly been on laptop due to lifestyle, but am looking to build my first desktop for a few years.  I have decent peripherals so no need to upgrade although the PC must be able to run a 3440 x 1440 (WQHD) display at 60hz (can't afford a high refresh rate display just yet).

Here is my part list so far: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/Wj8jZw

Must haves:

  • Powerful CPU for speedy processing, multiple cores for VMs
  • Good amount of RAM - got 2x16GB, looking to add another 2x16 in a few months
  • Always liked the look of the Lian Li O11 Mini, so would like to keep that around.

Notes:

  • Not worried about RGB - having the option would be nice
  • Don't like AIO, would prefer air cooled, not sure if I need to buy more fans
  • Prefer to stick to known brands, happy to pay the premium as it will be used for work and running throughout the day.
  • Planning to purchase either end of this month or next dependent on getting a good deal on the graphics card 3060ti or 6700xt
  • Need Wi-Fi in the short-term (building office at end of garden) not sure on desktop Wi-FI so any recommendations would be great either motherboard, PCI-E or USB.

For the RAM part im sure you already know this but be sure to have the same exact type of RAM because having two different brands or speeds dont usually work. Also, you could buy a motherboard that has onboard wifi and 2.5 gig ethernet if or when you wanna switch to that. Another alternative other than getting a board with onboard wifi is just a regular wifi card my recommendation is the TP-Link Archer TX50E PCIe x1 WiFi Adapter it has good reviews and should work fine.

Ditched the uneccesary crap and upgraded rams, board, and psu + 600£ for your gpu

Since this is a work machine performance >>>>> aesthetics, you can always add aesthetics later anyways

Rams can be oced anywhere from 4000+ cl16 - 4500+ cl18 depending on of you need latency or bandwidth, you can prob expect at most ~4600-4800 cl18 assuming you dont go hesitating on volt. I doubt youd need ram speeds that extreme so just a lazy oc to 4000 cl16 should be fine (just change freq and volt to 1.5v, lower volt if unstable)

The board has integrated wifi and shtloads of usb type a ports if you ever need 11 usb ports

Platinum psus are useless so swapped for a decent 850w gold unit so its futureproof incase you upgrade gpu

Thanks, have swapped out the motherboard, cooler, RAM and power supply based on your recommendations.

Consider an Intel build. Cores have higher IPC and boost clocks.

An NH-D15 is better paired with lower profile memory. If you stick with taller memory modules, get the NH-D15S or NH-U12A instead. They do not have memory clearance issues.

A 750W 80+ Gold PSU is quite sufficient and offers significant savings.
