Performance CPU problem

Hello,

I recently switched my CPU from i3 8100 3.6 gHZ(4 cores) to i5 9400 2,9 gHZ(6 cores). My problem is that when i switched to my new CPU, my PC has been performing way worse than before. My motherboard is ASUS PRIME H310M-K, and yes the sockets are the same, so it fits. Also another problem is that when i check online and on the box of the CPU, it says that there are 6 total cores, and when i go to task manager it says there are 4 cores. Does anyone have any type of idea on how i can fix this performance problem and if you do, i will be awaiting a respone. Thank you and have a nice day!

Make sure your motherboard isn't set to cap the number of active cores, and that Hyperthreading is enabled.

Try reloading the BIOS defaults.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

Check the BIOS to make sure all cores are enabled as was previously stated. There is also a weird windows option/setting I saw someone mention on the forum last week as well which I had never heard of - can’t remember what that was tho…

But even with only 4 cores, it shouldn’t be slower which leads me to believe something else is also wrong. Have you checked temps at all?

@FateXBG

Open msconfig, go to the Boot tab and press the Advanced options... button. Make sure the Number of processors box is not checked. Press OK and reboot. This tells Windows to find all of your cores and threads.

coretemp is one of many tools, but it’s easy and reliable.

Your missing a few cores at the bottom there…. Should have 4 (really 6… once you figure out how to get all cores working) at the bottom with temps for each.

But also, yes. Start to game and see what the the max temp ends up being. But first I’d try all the things listed above to try and get all 6 cores working.

@FateXBG

The Number of processors box needs to be cleared. It looks like you checked that box and now you are down to only 1 core.

There is no reason for the CPU fan to be running at high speeds when the CPU temperature is only 50°C. Make sure your CPU fan is plugged into the correct header on the motherboard. Check the bios to see if the fan speed can be reduced.

Good to see more cores and they are also running faster compared to when the cores were hiding. Is there an increase in gaming performance? Was it worth the cost?

Yes i have plugged it in the correct header. I have only seen increase in the performance on Fortnite. I used to get around 80-100 fps and today i saw that it was running on constant 200-250 fps. I'll try out some more games and see there how it performs.
