Future Server Build advice please!

Phizix

Budget (including currency): £500-700 at a push

Country: United Kingdom.

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Media Storage, Docker containers etc.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Hi all, long time lurker, figured I'd ask the guys (and girls) in the know about a possible new server build I'm planning.

So my now very old Synology 2 drive device is on it's last legs and whilst I do love the DSM software I'm looking at building my own server to get a lot more functionality. I'm looking to put something together that will deal with media storage and playback (likely through Plex or Jellyfin) and docker containers. Not much to ask I know 😉

In terms of the drives I already have them taken care of I'll be running 4x 3GB sata drives.

Things I'm ideally looking for:

Case - Ideally I'd be looking for as small a form factor case as possible, ideally something around the size of the DS920+ if possible but I'm flexible.

LAN - 2.5GB (it's not a deal breaker I can always get an adapter if needs be)

RAM - Min 16GB.

CPU - ideally an I5, incase I should increase it's workload in the future.

Other than that I'm happy.

Any help or assistance you can provide is welcome and appreciated.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Thank you very much for this, I wasn't expecting such a detailed system.

Is there any recommendation on OS? As mentioned in the first instance it will be a file server but will need capability to run docker?

Thanks again.
