Upgrading CPU and Motherboard

I have an existing system that is now broken. It was broken cuz I left it in Singapore when I was in Indonesia for 2 years (left it cuz I thought the covid was going to last temporarily).

 

Long story:

Why was it broken? Might be cause of rust or dust build up, it was working when I first got back in Singapore, was not booting but I cleaned it up changed the CMOS battery and did the eraser technique on the RAM. Worked for 1 day, then the next day it was broken. Suddenly it does not want to post, only turned on for 2-5 sec then restarted. Tried to remove everything except the motherboard, cpu and PSU. No beep (not posting). So I assume it is because of the CPU that is broken or PSU? But I think it is unlikely PSU problem? Not sure haha. Anyway I would like to upgrade to I think, cuz my system is old enough imo. I will try to revive it again tomorrow at my local PC market center (Sim Lim) and troubleshoot it.

GSkill Ripjaws V 2600 mhz 1x8gb and 1x4gb (originally was 2 but one was broken)

Cooler Master Hyper Evo 212

My plan was to get either i5 12400 bundle with b660 ASROCK steel legend (Total SGD 521). With cooler would be 100ish plus so SGD 621 approximately.
or Ryzen 5 5600x with Gigabyte b550 Aorus Elite, this got a bonus of WD Black SN750 SE 500GB Gen4 NVMe in my local store. (Total SGD 627)

I would choose i5 12600k, but without Z690 it would be useless, right? The combo would have a total of SGD 750 - 850 range. That is without the cooler... So I don't think it fits my price. Maybe if anyone can suggest a cheap cooler and motherboard I will consider it. Or is it worth the sacrifice?

If you don't plan to overclock, anyway, and because you are doing programming and coding and not just gaming, then the 12600K is probably the way to go.

 

BTW, If it was just for gaming I'd probably say 12400.

 

If the 12600K is outside your price range, then the 5600X would be next best.

How about upgradability between 12600k and 5600x? Which one is better for future proofing? I will consider 12600k if it is better in future proofing. Maybe I can squeeze in some more budget into it.

AMD's AM4 motherboard is at the end of its life with the 5000 series. Intel's 12000 series is on a new socket design, so should be good for future generation upgrades.
