Hello!

I recently set up a render server for my hobby editing projects. I have a current scuffed setup where I transfer my OBS recordings over to my render machine with team viewer, and its not exactly a great soltuion. It is very slow and involves a lot of manual work.

My solution idea was to purchase a new HDD, and maybe record directly to the render machine? Either way, the idea is to store footage exclusively on the disk. Should I opt for a barracuda or ironwolf? both would be 4TB and the ironwolf would only be about 10 bucks more expensive.

Personally I'd go for the Ironwolf as they are CMR drives while barracudas are SMR(I may be wrong on this)

If you are on ZFS.. remember ZFS was designed to work with cheep media and expects drives to lie to it and fail.

My advice is:

1. Choose something from one of the 4-5 known vendors out there.

2. Choose CMR (PMR) drives never SMR.

3. Choose drives that meet your performance metrics.

4. Saving money and having a spare is better than having more expensive drives.

If you meet that and you are on ZFS then you can do whatever you want and feel pretty good about it as ALL drives fail, it's only a matter of time.
