Hi, my friends pc often shuts down randomly mid use. Since it never happens when I'm there im not certain of it's overheating since I can't monitor the temperature, i was wondering if there is some kind of temperature monitoring software that can save the temperature of the components so that i can review it after the pc has shut down. Kinda like a crash report with temperatures.

I thought so too, but i dont know if its the cpu overheating or the gpu. Is there a stress test that does both?

You can use MSI Afterburner Rivatuner Statistic to monitor temps during games. It's an on-screen display/overlay. As long as youre under 90c you're fine.

the biggest issue is that my friend is basically incapable of doing this monitoring themselves so thats why i was hoping for a program that could log the temps for me since i haven't been able to recreate the shutdown whenever i have the chance of troubleshooting their pc. The temps would get to around 80 which should be a-ok but then a day later or so they'd text me that it shut down again. they've just got a new drive with a fresh install so its deff not software, they do have an old dell case with only a single fan with a single rad aio as exhaust so my guess is that the case needs more airflow for the gpu. what are your thoughts? (i know it's anoying to speculate without testing inbetween but i only get my hands on their pc every few weeks and never enough time to do propper tests so bear with me😅)

So you've stress tested and observed temperatures? Around 80c is fine.

You said 'randomly' what are some of the programs/apps that were running when this occured.

Let's look at hardware.
What kind of shut down is it? Are you BSOD'ing (if so reply with the error code) is it an immediate power loss (comment power supply model and rest of PC specs)

Also..Event Viewer can be really helpful in these scenarios.

its an intel i5 2600 with a radeon 580 gpu, they're usually playing dead by daylight but it seems to also shut down during csgo and league. not all that demanding games and it doesn't happen every time they play. it's a hard shut down, no screen or nothing just emediate turn off. the psu is a corsair vs550 so it shouldn't be overloading, i have monitored the wattage usage of the gpu to see if it was maybe spiking too high but it was no where near enough to cause the psu to shut off. i couldn't tell you what motherboard it is because it's quite old and i haven't been able to identify it, it also has generic 8gb ram with no obvious branding but i don't think these are causing the issues since they don't have as much of a correlation between load and shut downs. i'm unfamiliar with event viewer, how would i go about using it to monitor the system?

Pretty sure we found the problem.

VS550 so it shouldn't be overloading

550W is enough for an RX 580 sure, but VS550 is a really low end unit. So seeing power trips like this could be traced to the PSU. What country is your friend in? Sounds like he'll need to be in the market for a new PSU.

it's possible but that psu is the one i used to use recently and i had no issues with it even though my system was more demanding, it's defenetly worth it trying to swap it out with a loaner though so ill try to get one before i see them next. i also have a spare case with 2 intake fans so ill just move the system in there then since its always good to have more airflow. were in belgium btw, sadly no micro centers here for well priced parts so buying new is a last resort 😄
