Cannot turn on PC without clearing CMOS

TeeKaay
Go to solution Solved by TeeKaay,

Issue is resolved.

After I tried all of the ideas above, I went down to the shop (where I got the parts) and changed my motherboard. Got a new one, now the issue is resolved.

My system is new, a few days old.

Whenever I unplug the computer from the wall, pressing on the turn on button on the case will not do anything. The motherboard has lights on (ambient lighting) so there is power going to the motherboard. I press clear CMOS, then turn on the computer and it all works.

Restarting or turning off the computer will not break it. I can turn it back on normally. This only happens when the computer stops receiving power i.e. unplugged, switching the PSU off, ...etc (this happens a lot where I am from, as power cuts are frequent. I do have a UPS but since the electricity is out for quite a while every day, it won't support it all the time, it eventually turns off)

Is the CMOS battery bad? Is my motherboard bad?

This is the first time something like so happens to me.

I had a similar issue with a faulty Fractal Design PSU. But don't assume it's a problem with the PSU in your case.

Have you turned fast startup / hybrid sleep off?

Sounds like a CMOS battery issue, although since the motherboard is still kinda new I feel it's unlikely. Anyway, a CMOS battery replacement is cheap so I'd recommend you start with that. If you continue having problems Try updating the BIOS (the version you currently have installed is not the newest). If the problem persists even after that, your safest bet is to RMA the board and get a new one.

Please mention or quote me if you want a response. :)

They are already off. I checked, and every time I clear the CMOS, the settings go back to default and by default fast startup is off. Will double check and edit my answer here if it's not the case.

Ill go get a new battery for the CMOS. Is it safe to simply remove the battery from the motherboard and replace it with a new one? Are there any recommended steps to do that? I have never done that before.

Will also try updating the BIOS version.

Have you changed the battery? make sure it's good. Are you changing any of the bios settings once you reset them and boot? does you PC boot with no issue just on motherboard defaults? try that and change nothing in the bios a few times then unplug it plug it in again. of coarse do all this after you've verified the cmos battery is fresh just replace the current on regardless, couldn't hurt. hope I've helped over hindered.

It's totally safe to replace the battery as long as it's the correct type. Make sure to get a CR2032 battery that is Lithium based.

In my experience motherboards come with a faulty battery.
