VR Iracing & DCS Build

Go to solution Solved by Dr0idGh0sT,

This list would be what I could recommend. It has everything you'll need, Tho not everything is from mwawe.

Budget (including currency): 3500 AUD

Country: Australia

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Iracing, DCS World, IL2,

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

  • I have a HP Reverb G2 that I want to use.
  • Ready to buy now.
  • I have an I7 4790 with a RX 5600 Xt at the moment that is not coping with VR all that well.
  • I just want to have a decent VR experience in Iracing & DCS.

Hey Team,

I have my self totally confused. I have read a pile of articles and watched all manner of videos and now have no Idea what I need to build a PC to run Iracing & DCS in VR well.

Anyone have a decent spec list I can copy?

I use Mwave for my hardware: https://www.mwave.com.au/

So any links from there are appreciated.

The main things I am confused on is what motherboard to get and what processor, and then what PSU.

I plan on getting a RTX 3080. I already have SSD's. I don't care about RGB or looks at all. Just want to race without issues.

Any advice is appreciated. Feeling a bit lost.

Thanks,

I would suggest going with Intel 12700K or 12900K CPU and Z series motherboard as DCS is super dependent on CPU speed right now so if you can squeeze some more performance out of it with an overclock every bit helps. If it's not in the budget you should still get decent performance but DCS will take all the CPU speed you can give it right now.

Also

If you can add in a 2nd 1TB NVME drive just for DCS and game files or even a 512GB for the OS and keep the 1TB for games. My DCS install is well over 300GB by it's self now and it's only going to get bigger with the new modules and maps coming out this year (probably another 100-150GB with the WW2 Marianas & South Atlantic maps, Apache, F-15E, F4 etc..)plus the overhead space required to do the actual updates.

This will depend a lot on now many maps and modules you own obviously.

My list is already above 3000 AU$ and difference between 12700 non K and K variant is almost non existent or at most 2-3%, That makes absolutely no difference. 12900K is simply makes no sense for gaming, Extra E-Cores makes almost no difference, In fact difference for gaming between 12600K and 12900K is almost non existent.

Budget is going to be the deciding factor but there is a difference between a non-K sku and a K sku with an O.C of 5.1 Ghz applied on the P cores in games that are very cpu bound (DCS , ARMA 3 etc...) it should get you single thread improvements of around 10%

The only reason to look at 12900K chips is the high end chips tend to be the better performing bins so you can push them a little further with the O.C but you could win or lose that lottery so it's a gamble. Plus you need a really good cooler to deal with the heat.

If you don't feel the extra performance is worth the setup headaches and cost, that's totally understandable as you are firmly in the land of diminishing returns at that point. All I'm saying is right now the CPU is always the bottleneck in DCS and will gladly take every bit of performance you're willing to give it especially in VR. Hopefully with multi-threading and vulkan coming that will ease up a bit in the future.

In reality 99% people not gonna overcklock.

Hey team,

Thank you so much for this, it's super helpful & inside my budget.

Droidghost, you are a star 🙂

I don't want to overclock, I just want to build it, run it and race / fly.

I have found all the gear on Mwave and with the price drops that happened yesterday I am at $2800 so very happy.

The only thing I couldn't get on Mwave was the motherboard. And, as that is the is the number 1 thing that has confused me I have just bought what you suggested just via JW.com.au. Never used them before so hoping they are good.

I'll update you once it's up & running.

Again, really appreciate the help!!! 🙂
