Hey guys, i was just trying to figure out if i can run a raid configuration as a boot drive and an the rest of the drives as AHCI on the integrated sata controller on my MOBO. i have a Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3H-B3 motherboard. i currently have a 120GB 840 EVO as the boot drive and would like to buy another and set up in a raid0 as well as have 3 other separate hard drives as storage drives, not in a raid. is this possible? if so, i do already have other empty drives, what would be the best way to get my current Windows install and files on my boot drive over to the new boot array once it is set up? thanks in advance for the help!

if your mobo is in raid mode then all drives not designated as RAID drives become AHCI drives automatically; HOWEVER, the OS will only see RAID mode but the drives will still work as single drives without much trouble.

just be sure to configure your RAID array properly and enable RAID support on your OS and you'll be good to go!

source: im running 3 drives in RAID 0 and one standalone drive in my own system. (all on same controller)

alright thanks for clearing that up and replying so quickly :). you say that " the OS will only see RAID mode but the drives will still work as single drives without much trouble", will the OS still be able to access the information that I already have on it as if it wasn't seen in raid?

also, how do you recommend I transfer my current install to the new drive? i can reinstall Windows and my programs completely if i absolutely have to but would much rather just transfer it.

if your using windows 8/8.1 you have to do some registry editing and installing the intel RST stuff (if ur running an intel setup with an intel sata interface)

i do not completely remmeber how to do it so your gonna have to look it up :/ sorry (also be sure to back up your data before trying as it is possible to get into a BSOD boot loop)

the OS will see whatever you have configured for instance mine sees my 3 drives in RAID 0 as one drive and my standalone 500 GB drive

I put a pic below of what windows sees. as well as what the array consists of(dont laugh please i know i have a strange setup im poor xD)

My mobo has 2 different sata controllers but ill be sure to connect them both to the same intel one. i think my 6gbps ports are on an intel controller and the 3gbps ones are on a third party controller. i installed intel RTS but i cant find any information on the registry edits. any help on that or data migration?

this is the official windows article, but i dont believe this helped me much(but maybe when I did it i skipped a step or something lol) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2751461?wa=wsignin1.0

Just remember if you mess up, you can always change the drive mode back to whatever you had it the first time and try again. just be sure to make a backup of your data just in case.

P.S. if you get stuck in a reboot loop, and then change the setting and "fix" it. it may take your PC a REALLLLLY long time to boot up. I'm not sure why but that happened to me when I messed up a couple of times when I did it.
