Hello currently i have an i5 7600K, thinking of upgrading and im curious if i should stay on the same lga1151 socket or are there newer better ones... the motherboard i currently have is a Z270X-UD3-CF. The problem is i love watching streams or videos while i play games on my other monitor and the games stutter every once in a while i noticed that the cpu is maxing out. I was looking at the i9-9900KF but dont know if i should change the motherboard and go with a different cpu.

When I buy new PC components, I like them to last a few years. So I get the newest stuff available.

In your case, an Intel i5 12400 would have a good money/performance ratio for gaming.

For additional efficiency cores and more multitalking, you can also go for the 12600 or 12700.

The 12700 would have even more threads than the 9900KF.

My build:

CPU

Intel Core i7 9700 8x 3.00GHz So.1151

CPU cooler

be quiet! Shadow Rock Slim

Motherboard

MSI B360-A PRO Intel B360 So.1151 Dual Channel DDR4 ATX

RAM

16GB (4x 4096MB) HyperX FURY black DDR4-2666

GPU

8GB Gigabyte GeForce RTX2070 WindForce 2X 3xDP/HDMI

SSD

500GB Samsung 970 Evo Plus M.2 2280

HDD

4000GB WD Red WD40EFRX Intellipower 64MB 3.5" (8.9cm) SATA 6Gb/s

Power Supply

bequiet! Straight Power 750W Platinum

Case

Fractal Design Define R6
3x bequiet! Silent Wings 3 PWM

You can only upgrade within the same generation with the motherboard you have. Meaning the best you can do is upgrading to something like an i7 7700K or something. This will give you hyperthreading and better performance for multitasking, but dont expect any miracles.

If you want anything newer you have to get a new motherboard as well.

Ok i was not thinking of that haha... i see that the best i can go with this motherboard is 7gen cpu... so what would be a good cpu and motherboard combo for upgrading... i dont realy need a full atx board since i only have one gpu pluged in no other extension card or that stuff... or are there other benefits of a full atx board other than having more pci slots...

That depends on what your budget is. Both Intel and AMD are quite competitive - you really can't go wrong with either.

The 5600X is available from Newegg for just $225 right now and you can pair that with a basic $70 B550 board like the Asrock B550M-HDV or a decent $100 board like the MSI B550 Gaming Plus. So $295-$325 for a 6c/12t AMD.

If you want to go with Intel, there's the 12400 for $210 and pair it with a basic B660 board like the $110 Asrock B660M Pro RS or the nicer $160 Asus Prime B660-Plus D4, which is $320-$370 for a 6c/12t Intel.

Dont realy have a budget... i mean i dont want to spend more just for the looks just want to be performing so that i can slap in a new gpu in a year or so and that the cpu doesnt take a shit when i do that.... is it worth overclocking the newer procesors i was hoping on geting a K procesor and a Z chipset board if thats stil a must for overclocking cpus.... i would like to stick with intel btw

You can overclock all AMD CPUs regardless of suffix on B and X series boards, so the AMD one is overclockable.

With Intel, you'd need to get a K series CPU and Z series motherboard, so the 12600K and a cheap Z690 would be the cheapest option, which would be around $500-600. You are getting a better CPU there, as the 12600K comes with 4 E-cores to give you 10 cores and 16 threads, and it performs similarly to the 8c/16t Ryzen 7 5800X or i7 11700K, but you're also doubling the price.

And all that said, overclocking is basically dead these days. The processors are pushed hard out of the box, so there isn't much headroom left in them. Usually, a good OC only gets you about 10% more performance, which IMO isn't worth putting in the effort unless you're doing it for fun.

As for a GPU upgrade, any of the CPUs there should be able to handle any GPU up to an RTX 3090/RX 6900 XT as long as you're gaming at 1440p or higher. The 5600X, 12400, and 12600K are quite powerful considering that they're now considered mid-tier. They basically don't bottleneck a modern GPU in any significant way in most games unless you're a real framerate snob.

I game at 1440p 144hz yes... i would be upgrading the gpu aswell but the prices are crazy im not paying 3k for a 3080 no thanks hah i hope they drop a bit over the year... curently im runing a 1080ti whitch is going strong for now but the gpus have come so far from the 10... to 30...
