No Display when GPU is in Top Slot after CPU swap

avenirr

Hi, i’ve had this weird issue going on ever since i swapped my cpu. I had an i3 8300 previously and a gtx950. Both work great but i’m starting to “upgrade” and got an i5 9600k since i didn’t feel like buying a new motherboard along with a cpu. Ever since adding my 9600k, the display will not pop up unless it is in the lower gpu slot. Before the 9600k i had it in the top slot with zero issues. It shows display right away in the bottom, but nothing in the top now. I really do not want to use the bottom one as it blocks half my fans and looks really ugly. Anyone know what this issue could be? the 9600k has integrated graphics so i’m not sure what it could be. It displays with bottom slot but not the top slot. the bottom slot too is slower so i really don’t want to. i have a z390 a pro motherboard as well. i have checked that i plug it in right and everything. i’ve actually been using the pc for 2 months with it being on the lower slot and finally am deciding to figure this out

z390 a pro

The 9600K and the Z390-A PRO are compatible according to MSI's website.

The first (top) PCIe x16 slot's PCIe lanes go directly to the CPU. The second (bottom) PCIe x16 slot's PCIe lanes go to the chipset, which is connected to the CPU too.

So if there would be a broken connection of the CPU's PCIe lanes, everything would make sense, right?

You can take out the CPU and check for any bent pins, which could cause this problem.

Or maybe there is dust in the top PCIe x16 slot and you get a better connection after you cleaned it up.

that’s what’s confusing. like i said earlier i was using the top slot with no issue before i swapped and now the issue arises when i change cpus. it rules out dust or any weird connection. if i put in my old cpu and use the top slot, it works again. if i leave it in the top slot and change it to the 9600k the display doesn’t work and i have to move it to the bottom slot. it’s very confusing. There are a few slightly bent pins on the motherboard itself but they have been there way before this issue started happening. Again, the top slot works for my i3 8300 but not when i have my i5 in. i5 is brand new too
