Picking between Ryzen 7 2700x and 3700x

Go to solution Solved by YoungBlade,

If you already have a 2600, then the 2700(X) is a minor upgrade. The improvements in performance for streaming and editing are minor between the two - in many case they perform identically - so it's likely not worth the expense and hassle of upgrading.

But the 3700X is way faster than the 2600. That's a genuine upgrade. Ryzen 3000 was a massive leap compared to the previous generations and you would notice a difference there for streaming and editing.

I have a B450 tomahawk max mobo with a R5 2600. I was looking at the used market and time to time a 2700 or 3700 shows up. I want to start streaming a bit and video edit more often. Which of these two processors should I pick over the other? is the 2700x still that great? the prices can be similar considering some folks would trade for my old R5 2600.

If the prices are similar, you pick the 3700x all day everyday.

There were major updates in the CPU between the two generations so if cost is not a big factor I'd go for the 3700.

The 3700X is a much faster CPU regardless of what task you're talking about. So if the price difference isn't too big it's always gonna be the better choice.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

3700X all the way. Higher boost clocks, double the L3 cache and many changes internally to perform way better when communication is happening between CCX's. Even if it costs a bit more it's still worth it. 2700 (not even X) is just a slight upgrade of first gen Ryzen where 3rd gen is a much different architecture.

Can I go off topic and ask about the 5600g, it should work with my Tomahawk Max. As per UserBenchmarks it is very close to a 3700x, is that even possible?

Don't use UserBenchmark for comparing different products. It's garbage for that. Use online reviews like Hardware Unboxed/TechSpot, Gamers Nexus, Anandtech, or TechPowerUp instead.

The 5600G has basically the same performance as the Ryzen 5 3600, but with the addition of the integrated graphics. If you want to stream using the iGPU for encoding, that can be a benefit, but otherwise it won't be much of an upgrade for video editing. The 3700X is just better in that regard.
