I am a bit new to the forums (though i have been a fan quite a while) so I didn't know whether to put this in tech help or not, because I am mostly looking for suggestions.

A few months ago, my shaky school laptop's hardrive (i didn't really care for the computer because i did everything else on my rig) really messed up because of them bad sectors (it fell a few times and it shook a lot).

Anyway, the hard drive is basically unusable and I am looking for another cheap hard drive that I am going to install Linux on (looking at Fedora or maybe Ubuntu, looking at derivatives like Xubuntu).

So, I am starting to look on Newegg for good solid hard drives and I am requesting that maybe some of you fellow geeks can suggest something so the research workload can be lifted a bit.

The laptop's old hard drive (HITACHI 320GB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s) was 3.94 in. * 2.75 in. with a height of 7 mm

Since I bought a WD Blue 500GB for my rig (see in profile maybe) and it hasn't failed me (yet), I thought about this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236498

So I would really appreciate it if you guys gave some good suggestions because I have to buy soon.

also if you are going to recommend an SSD than don't bother because i am not willing to spend that kind of money, unless its under $70 which limits choices a lot...

also i dont now if moving it to "computer hardware" discussion is good

also also, feel free to argue with each other because i want a really good deal

i love you

Seagate SSHD, 1TB + 8GB cache

or the Momentus 7200rpm 500GB works too. I can't link it, the link is broken, just search it up.

Why would we want to argue with each other??

I like the specs and I would probably put a desktop equivalent in my rig, but the price is a bit much. the most i would be willing would be like $65 (i know that really limits things)

but thanks for giving me that link, i could use it later on.

also, if you guys argue, i would get better and better suggestions eventually :D

just wondering, what is the performance difference between an SSHD and a normal 7200rpm HDD? how about against an SSD

I especially like the first one and I might consider it, but the storage is a bit low and considering I ate up 100GB in the first few months i had my laptop (i do programming and general messing around), 120GB seems like a little bit

but it looks REALLY GOOD so thanks a lot. I've heard that once you go SSD, you never go back. :)

aaand, if i ever want to replace the laptop storage again, than i could add it to my rig :D

its also good because if i limit my messing around to my rig, then i could just keep school stuff on it and the storage would definetely not be a problem.

also, i looked at your dream PC specs and.... not to brag or anything....just check out my rig in my profile...

i love you

Try running Disk check if you can get it to boot. Also, edit your posts instead of making new ones.

Well, there's not much choice in the 2.5" and 3.5" market these days since Samsung no longer makes drives.

You can choose from either:

HGST aka Hitachi (now owned by WD)

A WD blue or black drive

A Seagate Momentus drive

because WD and Seagate bought all of the competitors so it's like every other component in the PC space: duopolies galore. Intel vs AMD, Nvidia vs. AMD, now Seagate vs. WD etc.

Going from 5400rpm to 7200rpm doesn't make all the difference, a 8GB cache will make it faster.
