It's probably a SATA only M.2 connector, and you bought a nvme SSD .... or the other way around.
If you search for the model of your old 250 GB SSD, it would tell you (if there's any mention of pci-e or nvme on it, it's using pci-e lanes to transfer data). If it says SATA or AHCI on it, it's a SATA SSD.
