Can Linux run without dedicated or integrated gpu?

Hey!

I am planning to upgrade my personal PC and use old components to upgrade my home server. I will be putting Intel i5-9600KF (without integrated CPU) to server that does not have any dedicated GPU. I also think there is no integrated GPU on the motherboard.

Can Linux run it? Can I just switch motherboard and CPU and expect that server will boot normally from previous installation from SSD?

I don't think Linux will care, but you might get a "no VGA" POST code from the motherboard.

 

A GPU is still useful in a home server because you can use it for hardware video transcoding in Plex or Jellyfin.

Unless your motherboard allows for no GPU to POST, then it won't matter what OS you use.

Thanks! I guess that info if it can POST without GPU is not easy to found in specification right? I will just try it then and see.

I doubt that board would have the ability to POST without GPU.

Generally no GPU POST features are only found on server boards.

Ideally in a home lab you'd still want to have some sort of display to diagnose issue that might come up.
