Budget (including currency) already spent to much lol

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: various

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

My son and I are building him a new PC. It is the first time either of us have attempted this. We are not very PC knowable, so we ran into some questions. Bear in mind that this started as a budget build (around $600). After comparing the price from new to used, I liked the warranty/price options better. When it came to upgrading for just a little more, I tended to upgrade. We have gone over our original intended budget, but I would like for him to be able to use this PC for years to come and upgrade only what is needed when the time comes for that.   We went with a Corsair RM750 80+ gold, Ryzen 7 3800x, Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1060 6GB (this is a place holder for a Radeon RX 6700 XT that we hope will come to us soon), and Corsair vengeance DDR4 3600mhz 2x8gb (was cheaper than 3200mhz). I am considering the Gigabyte B550 elite (rev. 1.0) as the Motherboard. For the price, it looks like it comes with all he should need for a while. It looks like it supports overclocking, RGB, and water cooling. If you have an opinion on another motherboard, I would love to hear it. We do not know if this build would be better off being water cooled or if just a good CPU fan and loading the case with fans would be better. Any help or thoughts on this build would be very much appreciated!! Thank you.

Those are good options. How much is the 5800X in comparison? What's the 12700K price? Did you already buy these?

That's a good choice. You can also consider the MSI B550-A Pro. It was always the best bang for buck Mobo.

Would go with 32GB is you plan to keep this rig for awhile. RAM is not too expensive right now so spending more now might save you more money later down the line as availability of DDR4 dwindles due to DDR5 production ramming up.

Go with which aesthetic you like better. A good air cooler can easily cool the 3800X. Make sure you get a case with good airflow.

You can use PC partpicker to make a list and post it here next time. Makes it easier for people to evaluate the parts you chose. Also, give an upper limit to your budget, allows people to know what they're working with. Let me know if you need recommendations of any component in particular.

We had decided to go with an AMD build early on, no real reason for it. I have already bought these 2 parts. I got the 5800k new for $325 thanks to a friend.  A 5600k would have been about $290. I could have gone cheaper with used or older parts, but I was also just more comfortable going with a newer model with warranty.

You have a very good point sir. I will be upgrading to 32GB.

If you got it already, just keep it. 3800X is still an excellent CPU

Sounds like it is up to my son then. Thank you very much for all your help, Sir. I will look into PC partpicker and figure that out. I would have replied sooner but this is also the first forum I have ever been on and I had to figure out how to tag and all.

BTW, my best friend since middle school is named Jonathan Lee so I find it amazing that you are the first reply and so helpful.
