I think the idea of these little suckers is pretty neat. handheld tech has existed for a while, but we are seeing a renaissance for the hand held computer as a gaming concept. one problem: price. Of the handhelds I have seen, the steam deck is the cheapest, but even still the price turns me away a bit. What are my best options, and is it the steam deck. I fully understand if the price of a windows/linux handheld cant go any lower. i just need to know if i can get something cheaper that isn't complete total trash doodoo garbo.

The Steam Deck is your best option bar none. I'm still not convinced they're not selling it at a loss. All of these handheld gaming systems are basically thin and light laptops in a different shape, and when you think about them like that, the prices actually make sense. A similarly specc'd laptop to the Steam Deck would cost anywhere between about $600 and $1000, depending on size, build quality, storage, etc. For about $500 for the mid tier Steam Deck, the price is really competitive. Plus, since they are a more niche product, pricing will be higher since they're not as high volume, as evidenced by the price of basically every other handheld on the market.

Gabe has confirmed, it's being sold at a loss.
