I just finished my build and thought that i could get into the bios of my msi b450 motherboard after the build. As that worked for a friend of mine with a b450 board from gigabyte. Later i found out that i need to flash the bios before i can use the motherboard with a 5000 series cpu. I wonder if it's safe to flash the bios while the system has everything connected to power, cpu, gpu etc? Could i just turn on the power supply and flash it with the cpu and everything installed? Or would it be better to disconnect everything that doesn't need to powered for the flash and take out the cpu?

First of all, list your spec.
Especially your motherboard so we can research what kind of BIOS flashing options available for you.

Motherboard: MSI B450 Tomahawk max 2
CPU: Ryzen 7 5800x
GPU: Radeon RX 6700XT
PSU: Seasonic core gold 650 GM
SSD 1: crucial mx 500 256GB bootdrive
SSD 2: Transcend SSD 220Q 1TB

As far as i know flashing with msi goes by turning on the power supply, pressing the button on the back of the motherboard (the button is there i checked), putting the usb with the bios on it in the right usb portal and letting it update for a couple of minutes. After the lights on the motherboard stops flashing turn of the power and it should be updated.

Well yeah. Don't forget to rename the BIOS into MSI.ROM though.
I flashed my B550m Mortar with CPU & RAM plugged in.
I didn't use GPU yet back then.

For additional info, I used a 16gb Sandisk Cruzer Glide 3.0

Formatted as FAT32

I dunno if this is still true, but there is infos in the internet that one should use 8GB, USB 2.0 flashdisk.
Unplug Everything but the ATX and EPS power..

I only heard about those infos after I flashed my BIOS though.

Note : I suggest using USB that has read/write indicator light.

Thanks for the info and tips man. I'll just onplug the power from the parts that don't need to be used. The usb drive that i use is a 4gb usb 2.0 drive but that should be fine. I only saw that you shouldn't use a drive with more than 32gb not really anything else. Thanks for the quick help.

Yeah, i'm serious about the read/write indicator light on the flashdisk though.
Because jeebus the Bios Flashback LED MSI put there is too subtle.
