Mobile USB-C (telescopic?) Controller recommendations

I've been searching online for an appropriate controller to use with my android phone (playing some retro games)

It's all well and good that there's the "Gamevice" for ROG phones but I've no idea how well that would work on other phones, I don't know if there's anything proprietary going on.

Has anyone got experience with this / can give any advice?

I'm tempted to try and cheap out on it given most high pricing but I'm a little uncomfortable with getting something that may fall apart day 1
