Trident Z compatibility with B550 Chipset

Ner00

Hi,

I am currently searching for some new RAM for my MSI B550-A Pro.

Found the G.Skill Trident Z „F4-4000C18D-16GTZKW„ but I noticed that no amd chipset is listed in the QVL.

Can someone tell me why?

Any number of reasons. QVLs are not exhaustive. The manufacturer of the RAM or whatever decides what kits they want to submit for testing for what CPU and mobo combinations. They may ignore certain CPUs, board manufacturers, or chipsets entirely. They may only submit their most popular kits, for example, and ignore the rest. Even the presence on the QVL is not guarantee to compatibility, as manufacturers often change the dies in the RAM without resubmitting for validation.

In short, QVL lists are basically meaningless. At the same time, they're also now largely unnecessary. Except for kits with very high clockspeeds, DDR4 RAM is virtually always compatible across the board with modern CPUs and chipsets.

All that said, what CPU are you seeking to pair this kit with? You won't get 4000MHz to work with most any Ryzen CPU without either downclocking it or running async with the FCLK. Running async carries a performance penalty, that the extra 200MHz, for example, of running 4000MHz vs just something like 3800MHz won't really compensate for. You really either need faster RAM or slower.

Single ccd chips are easier to achieve and stabilize at 2K 1:1 or higher. As for QVL being meaningless, tell that to the people who have compatibility issues.
