I'm not sure this is the best section to ask but I couldn't find a better one so. I've got a question I need answering and I can't find it anywhere online. I have limited data, 50 gigs a month to be exact. I don't game on that but I would like too. And so I looked up how much data an hour playing gta5 online takes up. Every single link I clicked on says gta5 online uses around 50mbs of data per hour. In fact is said most games use around that much data an hour. But when I launched the game to test it, according to task manager the game was using 300 kbps, witch as far as I could tell would be a hell of a lot more than 50mbs an hour. So I'm not sure what is going on, is my math just really bad, is it something to do with my wifi. I just don't know. Hopefully someone on here can help me.

Thanks.

300Kb = 37.5KB (bits versus bytes) which if maintained is 135MB in an hour.

However, instantaneous transmission speed doesn't really reflect how much data will be sent in a long period of time.

How much data is exchanged will vary depending where you are in the game and how many other players are around you (because more players = game server would have to send you bigger updates each second, like their coordinates, what they're doing, so that your game can draw them properly)

network speeds are in bits per second , kbps (kilobits) , mbps (megabits) ... you divide that number by 8 to get the amount in bytes ... 512 kbps = 64 KiB per second,  1 mbps = 128 KiB per second and so on.

The text probably said the game uses around 50 MB of data per hour, which translates into 50x8 = 400 megabits spread over 3600 seconds = 400/3600 = 0.111 mbps or 111 kbps.

Note that a game like GTA V will also download a few MB of content every time you go into multiplayer, so account or that besides how much regular transfer happens as you play.
