Hey.

So I was happy running the same CPU and GPU combo for awhile. Until I put an entry level GPU into my brothers computer (GT 1030 2gb), and found out he had got fps than me. because his CPU was better than mine.

Here is what I want to do. (Current CPU: Intel Core i5-6400) (Current mobo: Odense2-S)

So I want to swap my CPU for the best one I can get in my price range and socket (LGA 1151)

and found this CPU https://www.newegg.com/intel-core-i7-9th-gen-core-i7-9700/p/N82E16819118024

But I have heard that just because it fits in the socket doesn't mean that it will work.

So what would I have to do to make this CPU work?

And if I can't run this CPU, whats the best alternative.

Specs:

Intel Core i5-6400

GIGABYTE GTX 1050 TI

16GB Ram

300 Watt PSU

Windows 11 64 bit

If you need more information just let me know.

The problem is that there are two different LGA 1151 sockets, and for some reason Intel didn't add an extension to the 2nd one, so it just creates a bunch of confusion.

As for what CPU you can upgrade it to, the socket you have officially supports the i7 7700k as the highest end CPU. That said, since this is a prebuilt, you especially need to make sure that the motherboard has support for higher end CPUs. Doing a quick Google search says that a 6700k is the highest end CPU this motherboard supports. They currently sell for ~$150, though it would require a PSU upgrade in order to do, and you're likely to have performance limited by the poor VRM solution found on that motherboard.

For the $320 you'd spend on a 9700, you're better off getting a whole new CPU and motherboard. You can get a 12400F and a motherboard (ASUS Prime B660M-a D4) for that price. You would need to buy a new PSU, but you'd need to do that with basically any CPU upgrade for your system anyway. If you want to save money, you can drop the CPU down to the i3 12100F. It will still perform a lot better than your current chip, and will save you about $50 that you can put towards a new PSU.

Buy Intel as a whole company and reverse their decision. 8th and 9th gen's socket should be called LGA 1151v2. I don't understand why they don't call it this way when they had the sense to differentiate LGA 2011 (X79) from LGA 2011v3 (X99)

Your best option is the i7-6700, not exactly cheap (unless you get way better deals than I can find) nor does it make a huge difference. This is after all in the years of stagnation on Intel.
