Format drive before Windows backup

Hello everyone,

My relative, who lives overseas, is retiring and his employer will wipe out his drives.

He asked me to help him backup his drive. Normally I would just back up the folders that have something important (Photos, Videos =, etc.), however I am trying to help him use the integrated Windows 10 back up tool.

I have one question:

Do I have to format the external drive, or can the drive have other files on it?
