Transferring data between storage devices

Does anyone know when transfering files from an sd card to an external drive directly, do the files transfer over to the laptop first then to the external drive or does the transfer skip the laptop. Also if I have two network drives and I'm transfering files from one nas to another using a laptop, do the files copy to the laptop as well or skip the laptop and while the transfer is happening can I close the laptop assuming the transfer is not copying to the laptop first.

The laptop is the device mediating the transfer, so the data comes to the laptop and is turned around and sent to the other NAS. If you sleep the laptop, the transfer will suspend.

thanks for the replies, I got another question. I'm in the process of moving data from a my cloud home duo to a synology. my cloud says it was full with 1.82tb, after moving everything over to synology it says I have 1.79tb. I compared folder sizes between my cloud and synology, as far as I can tell everything transferred over, synology did have some duplicated files which I deleted but everything else is there. what am I doing wrong. why does synology say it has less space used vs the mycloud?
