This is just something I posted on another forum. I'm not sure if this topic has

been brought up before. I'm just curious about when people first sort of got

obsessed with overclocking if at all. Was it right away or did it take some time?

In weightlifting we always speak about getting bit by "the Iron bug" the first

time you lift some heavy ass weight and never look back. Well what's your story

about overclocking?

For me, it's like I just love the numbers, I mainly play League of Legends so my

OC is just an arbitrary number it doesn't matter and doesn't effect my game at

all. I spent all night overclocking my CPU until I could get it to 4.8 GHz I

didn't even care that in stress tests it got to 90 degrees. I'm so excited for

getting another computer just so I can try and OC the CPU to that magic 5 GHz.

After the first successful overclock I wanted to buy a test bench to benchmark

parts. Purchasing motherboards is no longer based off of their "gaming" features

or "entertainment" but purely on what I can overclock the best on.

So please, share your stories with me! xD

I have a similar approach, I'm highly interested in the numbers and results I achieve. (I've always had this interest since I built my first PC at 7 years old).

I remember playing around with an Intel P4 Prescott, can't remember the socket, but it was around 2000-2001.

I spent 12 hours trying to push my 4770k, I achieved a 4.6ghz OC, but I'm tempted to try again.

Recently, I have been overclocking alot with my new GPU. I won the silicon lottery when it came to my GPU, 1400 core, 7200mhz RAM, 1.35v on Air cooling.

EDIT: I agree with the weightlifting analogy, I lift too! :D

When I initially got my i7 3930K, last year I tried to to overclock it past 4.7GHz for days without any success. After that I tried this procedure every time Asus came with a new update, but nope... it just wasn't in that chip. Then a couple of months later I accidentally dropped it an it died... Now I have an i7 3820 at 4.8GHz, but I still want more... again.

For me? Celeron 300A. Turned a 150 dollar CPU into a 500 dollar Pentium 3 450 for free. I was hooked.

AMD had some really good overclockers after that and I was AMD for awhile. Intel really started to kick butt again around Wolfdale. Thing overclocked like crazy. My e8400 was fantastic. Went to 4 ghz on stock voltage. Got lucky on my Haswell. Sandy Bridge was prob up there with the best ever, if not the best. I skipped Sandy cus that darn e8400 was so darn fast for so long in games. It still runs. SSD and that thing is as good a internet machine as you can ask for.

I have never been one to push voltage and have never broken any CPU's, but if I can't OC it a bit I don't want it. GPU's? I have broken those. I no longer push ram overclocks on video cards very hard. RIP 8800 GT.

CPU:24/7-4770k @ 4.5ghz/4.0 cache @ 1.22V override, 1.776 VCCIN. MB: Z87-G41 PC Mate. Cooling: Hyper 212 evo push/pull. Ram: Gskill Ares 1600 CL9 @ 2133 1.56v 10-12-10-31-T1 150 TRFC. The benchmarks are like my games. My favourite genre of benchmark is cpu benchmarks, cant get enough of em. I the same with most hobbies, always have to make things faster, louder and more powerful. Once i get a proper car im actually screwed for money cos ive got to do a sub 7min lap of the ring and a 10 second 1/4 mile. With pc's the target is 5ghz or 1.8v on air cooling :P. I just got addicted after i bought my gt610, my games ran badly, so i overclocked things instead. I had 3 cpu's before i got a proper gpu. Now im building rigs just to oc with, 478 is the best so far,  it really cheap and really challenging, not to mention the voltages are brilliant.

Nice clock speed on your i5! What cooler are you using and how are your temps?

Alpenfohn matterhorn is the cooler. its a single tower heatsink. temps are normally around the high 60's low 70's at my 24/7 oc of 5ghz. on 1.4v now, it used to do it at 1.38v but the runs at 5.35ghz was at 1.62v. it still didnt get over 75c at this voltage because i got the ambient temps down to 10-12c. i like sandybridge because i can run silly oc's 24/7
