Budget (including currency): < $2000 (US)

Country: United States

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: For now I want to mainly play games like fallout 4, Skyrim, and Wolfenstein: The New Order. I have a laptop that I'm using for work, but I'd eventually like to use this new PC for work/projects as well. I use Docker, VScode, and gimp for a lot of things.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

My current list is this: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/vYNTbh

CPU:
 AMD Ryzen 5 5600G 3.9 GHz 6-Core Processor
CPU cooler:

Cooler Master Hyper 212 RGB Black Edition 57.3 CFM CPU Cooler

Motherboard:
Asus ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING (WI-FI) ATX AM4 Motherboard

Main Mem:
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory
Storage:
Seagate Barracuda Compute 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Graphics:

Asus GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB Phoenix Video Card

Power:

Corsair RMx (2021) 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

Case:
Fractal Design Meshify C ATX Mid Tower Case

This is my first time building a Computer, so I'm open to suggestions.
I already have peripherals, but I'd like to use two monitors. I also have an external 1TB hard drive and have plans to get a NAS.
I'm still unsure about OS.
I've been wanting to experiment with Linux, and I don't want to pay for Windows.

This is a very mixed bag.

1) You are using both a low power discrete GPU and an APU. While they would technically work they are entirely redundant, in fact I am not sure if 1050ti would provide better performance to the APU. Going for a 5600X CPU and investing into a better GPU is a good idea. If you could fit a 3060ti or similar into your budget that would be good.

2) The PSU is excessive power delivery wise. Motherboard may be a big higher end that what you

3) SSD storage is a great quality of life (and performance) improvement. Both SATA and NVMe work fine.

4) You don't need to pay for windows 10 upfront, you can use the trial version with some minor inconveniences or go linux.

I would suggest something like this:
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/dVZdj2
You could buy additional storage etc later.

Current system. CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X; MoBo: Gigabyte X570S Aorus Master; RAM: 2x Crucial Ballistix MAX 2x8 GB (BLM2K8G40C18U4B); GPU: RX 6900 XT Gigabyte Aorus Master; case: Fractal Design Meshify-2; Storage: Samsung 980PRO 1TB NVMe SSD + 2x Samsung 980 1TB NVMe SSD; PSU: Seasonic Focus GX-850; Cooling: Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360.

OK I like it, consider the nh-d15 for cooling, you have a 6 core high clock speed CPU and it will run quieter.

GET AN SSD, drop the TB 3.5in HDD if you can't afford both GET AN m.2 SSD, make sure its nvme and fits, even if only for boot drive and 3 fave games. Will also speed up swapping OS later or multiple installs/VM. You might be able to shell the 1TB external and install it. Flash memory is better for portable drives.

Get case fan pack if you don't have any

Consider upgrading GPU, you're pretty heavily bottlenecked for GPU intensive tasks. I use mine to heat/mine in the winter.

OS- Linus has video, grey market windows keys exist, techquickie -Getting Windows on the BLACK MARKET, can even be done in a cool way by buying old win7keys for nothing and upgrading to 10.

I like it, but if he upogrades his GPU he SHOULD DEF have his original PSU, power efficiency curve will save money over time. ryzen 5 5600 has reccommended psu of around 600W as it is. It looks like he's buying on Newegg where his PSU is cheaper anyway and the diff frrom cheapest on either is $10 and the Corsair brand.

You don't need 600W PSU for the 5600G/5600X, assuming it is not a weird edge case like extreme overclocking. If anything higher end PSUs are going to be less efficient at such relatively (to their power) load, assuming same (gold) rating.

You don't need an NH-D15 either but atleast there is some utility to having it.

OP does if upgrading GPU like I said. 50% is sweet spot for PSU usage as well, and yeah beefier coolers mean longer lifetime of hardware, efficiency, higher max output, and quieter. EDIT* 60-80% usage is fine for most builds*

In order for OP to hit too much Wattage for lower efficiency he would need an excess of ~800Watts with OP's system, ~1000w with upgraded GPU

The 80 Plus Gold rating meas that the PSU is rated for at least 87% efficiency at 20% load, 90% at 50% load, and 87% at 100% load.

yeeeaaaahhhhhh, I can see how it seem like a mixed bag. I was getting pretty overwhelmed with all the options, so I wanted to get a list together and get some feed back.

I agree the GPU is lacking, but that is something I was planning to upgrade in the future. I'll look around some more.

As for the PSU, I was thinking it would be better to have for future upgrades.

5600G/5600X are not going to give you 50 percent load for even the 750W PSU.
