I want to upgrade my CPU and motherboard as I've notice a drop in performance over the last 2 years. I live in the UK and my budget for both CPU and MB would be £400 in total. As an engineering student I use SOLIDWORKS (3D modelling software) a lot and I also play Rainbow 6 siege. When I have task manager open I can see that R6S takes up 40-60% whilst Solidworks takes 20-40%. I've also seen that when i open and try play Fortnite I get lots of fps drop and random freezing when I never had an issue like this 2 years ago. So I'm wondering if it is my CPU that is holding my performance back or something else. (my GPU has latest Nvidia 1060 6gb drivers)

These are my current PC specs

  1. CPU - intel core i5 7400 3Ghz + Stock cooler
  2. GPU - MSI GTX 1060 6gb
  3. PS - Be Quite Pure Power 10 500W 80+silver
  4. MB - Gigabyte H110M-S2
  5. RAM - Corsair 2x8GB 2400 speed
  6. 240gb 2.5" SSD OS + 1TB 2.5" sata SSD + 1TB HD

If it is a CPU upgrade I need then these are what I'm thing so for to buy on boxing day sales (26th Dec):

  • i5 10600k
  • ryzen 5 3600
  • ryen 5 5600x
  • ryzen 7 5800x

Would u recommend any other CPU, bare in mind I do not want to spend on a new Power supply and preferably try to save money if the higher end CPUs won't make much difference.

I would say it depends on the prices of them. If all the same price, the 5800x is the best one to get from choices. The 12600k is typically around the same price as 5800x, so that's another CPU to consider. Do note that the 12th mobo's are more pricey than the other options.
