Hi all,

I am currently making a tough decision and wanted your all's opinion. Mechanical engineering or electronics and computer engineering? I love computer hardware, but I love working on cars just as much. I hate programming though but that won't deter me form the hardware side. Can someone give me info on both and which one I would be better off in?

Does not having a second parenthesis around something bother anyone else as much as it does me? (Like if this statement was missing a second side)

if you wanted to do cars why arent you on a car forum? instead you came to a tech forum.. i think thats a hint towards computers imo but dont let me push you. the last thing i want is for you to be stuck in something you dont wanna do. pick and go with whatever you really wanna do. and plus im pretty sure if you do change your mind you can change but its not the greatest decision so think hard my friend and the best of luck in whichever path you choose! :)

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only a GTX 1080, just a single 1080, where my glorious PC once stood....

Working on cars and mechanical engineering have very little in common.

I personally would say go with computer engineering. It's a pleasant hybrid between computer science and electrical engineering, so you get a lot more of dealing with PCB design and discrete components, typically.

Well, what's to say this isn't posted on a car forum as well?

Hahaha.

erty176, how do you feel about math?

Both fields are math extensive. Computer engineering and most things electricity are very heavy in imaginary numbers, vectors, and vector fields. Mechanical Engineering is very heavy in linear algebra, differential equations, and vectors.

I can do the math. Coming out of high school I have completed linear algebra, calculus II(and all the ones before it), college chemistry, university physics, all the englishes needed, and all my history credits are done and accounted for as well. I still understand it is a heck of a workload however, I feel prepared for either major as I am already a full college semester ahead in both.

As someone who is currently working on getting my ME degree, you have to be able to understand thermodynamics and the idea behind mechanics. Some more specifics involve heat and energy transfer. My university also calls for me to take some programming classes and what I call 'computer based math' where you work with MATlab and some other simulation software.

If you really like electronics and computers, then Computer Science/Engineering is a great decision as it involves some Electrical Engineering and computer software and hardware.

Personally after getting my bachelors in ME I might go back to school and get a second degree in electrical engineering or Comp. Engineering, but that is just me because my school denied my application for a dual major (it's all Jerry Brown's fault  ).
