CPU upgrade question.

Hello everyone!

I'm looking to do a CPU upgrade my current I7-8700 isn't cutting it for me anymore. That being said I'm looking into either a I9-9900k of a Ryzen 3900x.

I already have the CoffeeLake motherboard and I'm swaying towards that due to that reason, BUT I also see the performance of the Ryzen CPU's now. I do a lot of gaming, video editing, and streaming.

So my question is, do I spend the extra money for the Ryzen CPU or do I go with the 9900k? I should add I have a 1660TI currently but am also looking to upgrade that as well and put that as my secondary GPU.

I am open to other CPU ideas if suggested!

EDIT: Fixed Current CPU

I'd wait until you get a new GPU before you worry about your CPU. Presuming you mean an i7-8700.

That said, if I were you I would skip all of the drop-in upgrades as they are just too expensive. An i7-9700 doesn't really make much sense as it's not much of an upgrade, and an i9-9900k is too expensive right now.

Also, those are much harder on your motherboard than the 8700. You'll need to make sure it would be strong enough to handle it, and often it won't.

Upgrade GPU, then reassess what CPUs are available when that time comes.

If you do a lot of CPU rendering, then perhaps consider a discounted 5900x upgrade. Possibly 12700k.

I would be buying a new GPU the same time I were to buy my CPU.

Given how hard it is to source a GPU, it may take some time. By the time you actually acquire a reasonably priced on, the CPU landscape may have changed. Get a GPU first and then see what's going on CPU-wise.
