Intel Vs AMD recommendation

8lec

Hi. I currently have a core i3-6098 and h110m mobo. Yes, it's very slow for editing and blender.

I'm upgrading my platform soon. I have to buy a motherboard today, and will wait until zen3+ (probably) to buy a CPU. I'm waiting in hopes of scoring a sweet discount. And I'm a little conflicted. Please read my entire post before replying with a recommendation thx 😃

Until last week I was gonna go B550, for sure. But then I saw a leak that the 12400f was gonna be less than 200 bucks and edges out the 5600x (which is the CPU I was thinking of getting) in PugetBench.

And apparently there's a new coin on the block Raptoreum, which is gonna balloon the price of zen3 and zen3+. I hate all PoW crypto and refuse to mine or buy any due to its environmental impact (so buying zen3+ and then mining, is out of the question).

I also want an upgrade path. With b550 it's easy. I can get Ryzen 3xxx or 5xxx and upgrade to a higher core count without any issues, cuz the power consumption at stock is not too high. With Alder lake and z690 the difference between a 12600k and 12900k isn't that big, but I don't know about raptor lake. Also power consumption is said to be better but how much better, since they'll be adding more E-Cores next year. ATM my Scythe Fuma 2 cannot keep a 12700k cool, let alone a 12900k.

So here's my conundrum.

Also if you are wondering, why don't I just wait and buy a board and CPU together, well shipping a motherboard will cost me around 70usd. Shipping a CPU and something small like RAM will only cost me 40 bucks. Also for some reason there's no import tax on the CPU but there's a good chunk on the mobo. So I'm ordering a mobo now with my aunt who I'll be visiting in the hols. So free shipping and no taxes on the board.

I've waited long enough to upgrade my CPU and wanna get rid of this dual core 'beast' 🤣.

Please help me decide

Better than what? 11th gen? At idle, yes. Under load, nope. Better than Ryzen? At best, it matches Ryzen's efficiency, but fully loaded, it can draw over 100W more.

Oh I was referring to raptor lake when compared to alder lake

It is not a good idea to buy a motherboard at a different time than the CPU unless you have a way to test it.

Two out of the last three builds I did the motherboard had to be returned. One was my 5800x build and the other was my i9 10900k build. My i9 10900kf build was the one that was trouble free. Both boards the failed were ASUS Heros, so not cheap.

Going past a return point means an RMA and they take a while.

As for power consumption. My 5800x uses more power at idle than my i9 10900kf and i9 9900k do combined.

The 5800x uses less power on an all core render.

If you are CPU rendering a lot go Ryzen 5000. If you are going to mainly do GPU rendering what CPU you choose won't matter.

The computer I built that is used for editing and rendering is a i9 10900k with a RTX 3090. It was picked over the 5800x because it makes less noise. Sound is recorded in the same room so that was the decider.  The 5800x is used for gaming.
