My daughter wants to use the screen of her iMac (last of the Intel ones) or her M1 MacBook. as a display for her switch. So looking for a cheap usb capture device. Any suggestions greatly appreciated as the first one we got from Amazon didn’t work as it was damaged on delivery.

playing trough a capture card really isnt a nice experience, even with very low latency capture cards it's often at least a bit sloppy.

and unfortunately along with that comes that cheap and low latency are often polar opposites with capture cards... and i wouldnt dare quote on stuff having polished drivers for an M1 macbook...

Probably the best method would be an Elgato Cam Link 4K. Supposedly the latency is quite low though for the price of it, you could just buy a cheap 1080P monitor and have a much less complicated and better experience.

Thanks. She is a student so has little room for a monitor as well. I have plenty of spare ones but as I said, room is the issue. I thing she only really wants it to use ring fit so not the most demanding use case.
