I got an MSI 970 mobo - and I have a FX 6300 on it now. I checked PC parts picker and it says I can get up to the FX8370 - so I went and got an FX8350. I throw it in. Assemble everything and I get no post. I pulled the cmos battery, I pulled the ram, I did all the stuff. Everything boots up, fans kick, RBG lights up, AIO starts going. But no post. Just says no signal. Tear it back apart, put the 6300 back in and it posts just fine. I got a M5A97 LE R2.0 mobo as well we tried and no post with that either. Any way I can get this thing to work????

Yes I know, all the gear is dated. But parts are way too expensive and this is what I have to work with.

Im a disgruntled old man.

Everything boots up

so by boot you mean powers on.

As stated on asus website the board will need to not be using the stock bios to support that cpu , has the bios been updated?

As far as I know - systems all up to date from the updater thing. If it's something I have to go outta my way to get and install then no lol

Yeah updating windows isn;t going to update the motherboard firmware to support the cpu , you need to check what version of bios the board is running and see if it supports the cpu.

It doesn't say which updates the CPU - do I just grab the newest one?? I've been getting weird results in my googling. I read that using that CPU would cause the Mobo to catch fire and all kinds of stuff

Use the latest bios for the board and update using the method the site recommends. The bios version requirement is listed next to the cpu on the cpu support list.

Next to your cpu the version appears to be higher than the stock version so an update might be required.

As far as fires the cpu shouldnt start any form of fire unless there was a major problem with the hardware

Be sure whenever you swap CPUs you clear the BIOS each time.
However it does sound like a dead/defective CPU.
I know you referred to checking "PC Parts Picker" but did you actually buy the chip off of fleabay?

Well I called the MSI support line and the CPU is pizdec. It was used, but it came from a guy who upgraded to new everything so I got the mobo and all that and it was never overclocked or anything just cruised.

This is the issue with old hardware though. Cant get new stuff because its insanely priced. Stuck with old stuff and buying twice because its govno. oh well.

So you didnt apply the update that adds compatibility for the cpu

This may be what you have to do.

It's really starting to sound like a dead chip.
From what you've described the problem follows the chip (8350)  - Is that correct?

That was my original thought, but I didn't want to break hearts. The bios would support the FX-8350 and 6300 because they are on the same release date, so updating it wouldn't matter.

Dead chip.

From what I'm seeing here that's it.
Would be nice if whom the OP bought it from would just swap it for another one.

Know it all too well.
For a bit of powersavings, why not try an FX-8300 instead?

Same basic chip that's rated for 95W instead of 125W of power draw, plus when you get down to it, the only real diference between most any FX chip anyway is it's default settings/clocks - For desktop use they all are more or less the same in capability.
The only real difference that's noticeable isn't enough to make much difference when ran for daily use, the REAL difference shows when going extreme with them.
I've got two of these 8300's and they are indeed good chips that run well with the right tweaks applied.
Between these and all the other FX chips I've got these are probrably my personal choice for any kind of daily useage. I don't have an AM3+ setup as a daily anymore but if I did, one of these would certainly get the call to duty.

That or the FX-8370E. That was a pretty decent chip too. Low leakers. They clocked decent on ambient cooling for sure.

Any of the "E" chips really, all of those are lower wattage and do decently too.

For the cost of these old AMD chips, you could be finding a complete Dell Optiplex on ebay and harvesting the board and i7 3770 or even i5 3470. They're 50 bucks on the local buy/sell near me.

You've got a dead chip for sure though, those old chips were a hot mess when they were new, if that makes you feel better? Sorry for your loss though
