depends on what comes with the motherboard.

Some only need power (maybe components, see manual for more).

Using an USB stick with BIOS installed for flashing new BIOS when pressing a flashing button, however it can be risky and could brick your motherboard or be super simple, either way it's a risk. Doing BIOS update could limit some features on older motherboards to make the most of newer CPU's, that can be a non-issue just to make you aware.

 

Or you need to start or boot the system and go into BIOS to update it that way.

and it doesn't seem like you can flash it without starting it up. unless by other more technical means.
