Downsizing my computer...

OneOfYas

Hello lovely community.

I am wanting to lose to size.. yes size is not everything 🙃

So moving from wait for it.... Coolermaster HAF X! Yes old, good case but too big now.

System spec.

Ryzen 5 5600x with a moderate OC of 4.75ghz with all power efficient profiles enabled (C1E and all that stuff)

The board is a Gigabyte Elite X570.... going to need to replace this... not sure what comes close at say m-ATX size.

The PSU is a Superflower one, 600w I think and is a top tier unit.. ahh Leadex.

I have 2 SATA SSD and an 8TB HDD to be used too so need good storage room.

I live in Ireland (UK)

Thanks.

well, what're your size desires?  You can get muuuuuuch smaller ATX Cases than yours, and keep your hardware.

If you want about as small a case as possible for ATX, there you go.

I am sorry, yes I was not clear; I do want to drop to m-ATX.

Lovely case though, thanks for showing me!

Edit forgot the GPU.. RTX 3060, it is an MSI GAMING X 12g

I was just checking, as you have a fairly well featured ATX board, and most mATX boards are on the cheap side of build design.

The "good" boards are almost always ATX or mITX.  mATX is usually not awesome for some reason.

This is kind of off-topic, but I've always wondered why mATX was such a niche size. IMO, mATX should be the de-facto standard, with ATX being for enthusiast/large builds and ITX for small form-factors.

basically yeah.  mATX can easily do 4 RAM slots, GPU, 2 M.2's, and other such things.

Most enthusiast builds don't need more than that.  None of my boxes at home are using additional PCI-E slots normally.

ATX and its sizes go back over 20 years.
that will not fly with people like me. ATX is ATX.

I dont mind making mATX the defacto standard, but lets keep the names what they are. We are not the USB-consortion now are we. 😄

And i can tell you, in my personal experience that today we have way less of any standard in that regard then we used to have.

Its not hard for a manufacterer to keep within certain tolerances, they just dont want to or dont care.
And since people keep buying irregular sized (outside the (m)ATX/ITX sizing) motherboards, manufacturers will keep making them.

The only solution i think is just being as a motherboard or case manufacturer that they become more clear about their sizing and tolerances.
But i've been dreaming that dream ofr over 2 decades now, i have little hope its gonna get any better...

When i ask for more specs, don't expect me to know the answer!

I think you slightly misunderstood my point. I don't want to change anything about the sizes themselves, nor their naming. I was more commenting on the current state of the industry and how mATX is very much neglected compared to the other two. For what it offers, it is the best size for most uses, yet gets very few decent implementations.

Trust me, I agree USB-naming is train wreck and nothing should follow in their footsteps!

My apologies, i misunderstood it then. Sounds like we are pretty well agreed on this subject then. 🙂

Thanks for adding to this discussion guys, I was not aware of how neglected mATX is.

Bit of a tangent.

This topic wasn't about that.

My sincere apologies.

If cost isn't a huge issue, I'll second the cerberus-x. I've seen a lot of m-ATX cases that are larger.
There is an m-ATX variant of the cerberus-x though.

One thing to point out - if you're rocking an all-core OC, you probably want to think more about using PBO or curve tuner. You're pumping 1.5-3x the power for MAYBE 1-3% more MT performance and lower ST performance. All core OCs stopped making sense 2ish years ago. This isn't 2004 anymore and algorithmic boosting is useful - USE IT.

This is PBO.

Thanks for the pointer about the Cerberus case. It's a little on the expensive side for my tastes, again though I do like the design.

but remember, you don't have to buy a new motherboard to use that case.
