Thanks for the recommendation. The Hp envy x360 seems just right.

What would you recommend looking for on a remote desktop software? I'm concerned about security. I already have a VPN which is Cyberghost. Also, there are a bunch of choices Splashtop SOS, ISL Light, NinjaRMM, etc...

Parsec

Hello,

I currently  have my trusty laptop that I hope to sell. It is powerfull but it is not very practical for travels or for working from outside home.

I'm looking to have a powerful home PC that I can access from a small and portable PC.

In my home PC I'm looking to be able to run heavy softwares (launchable from my portable PC), store movies and series (accessible from my portable PC) and play games (directly on my home PC). If I can say it another way would be that, if I'm on the train with my portable PC I'm still able to use the heavy software on my home PC or watch media saved in the latter.

I don't know much of servers so I don't know where to start.

Can you give any me advices, tips or guidance? what would you recommend?

Thanks for reading, always love the feedback in this forum 😄

Gonzalo

The latency will be trash for games. 👎

Movies/TV will be best done by running a PLEX server on your home pc. 👍

"on the road" = you will most often be on a trash download speed, never mind the latency. 👎

On the train = dropsouts every few seconds and massive lag the rest of the time 👎

Before you do anything to make this work you need a STABLE AND FAST internet connection. Not something that can be guaranteed on the train and such.

Media streaming sure plex can do that and you can cache some locally so interruptions won't matter too much.

However do keep in mind that this will OBLITERATE your 4g data plan and will easily max out the fast part of any unlimited plan.

I assume these are critical tasks you need to do on the system? Then I would just recommend a good laptop. A asus g14 is a small powerhouse of a laptop.

As for gaming well depends on the internet connection but usually it kinda mostly sucks to do.

Wow, thx for answering so fast.
I wouldn't run games from afar. When I'm away, I would only watch media, or code algorithms that then would run on my home PC.

Examplary use case would be:

> I'm at work with a solid internet and I want to continue designs/algorithms/finite element simulations that I made in my home computer.

> I'm at my brothers/parents house with a solid internet and I want to watch a movie that I saved at home.

I currently have a Asus ROG ZEPHYRUS-S-GX735GW-EV043R and an old Acer ASPIRE V3-772G-747A8G1TBDWAKK. I would like to replace them by something like a home fixed PC and a small 2 in 1 like a lenovo yoga book.

That is A ASTRONOMICALLY better situation already :p. Yes this is totally doable then. Just take your choice of remote desktop software for controlling the pc and use Plex for media streaming as that has cache and all that stuff.

As for a good mobile laptop hp got that nice new one they just came out or you can trust the good old hp envy x360 ryzen version.

You can try it out right now even as both device you have are good enough to do it.
