Hey all, I'm considering taking a bit of a left field approach to my next build and going with neither intel or amd, I was thinking of a build based around the Ampere Altra max 128 core CPU. Has anyone ever used an Ampere before and if so what are your thoughts. Would be great to see Linus do a review / compare between these and the intel and amd closest rivals and maybe any other outside the box CPU producers out there. Come on LMG, show the world that they don't have to bow down to the intel/amd peer pressure, there are other options. Thanks

I'm going to glance past how ridiculous this sounds for a moment and ask what you plan to use this PC for, firstly.

How much research have you done into this prior to making this post? You're fully aware of what that type of chip is useful for and what its strengths and massive weaknesses are and how terrible of a desktop PC CPU it would make? That's a hyper optimized chip for very specific workloads that aren't even close to what a desktop is used for.

What OS are you planning to run?

Ryzen 7 7800x3D -  Asus RTX4090 TUF OC- Asrock X670E Taichi - 32GB DDR5-6000CL30 - SuperFlower 1000W - Fractal Torrent - Assassin IV - 42" LG C2 - Windows 11 Pro

what peer pressure?

this is literally the least pressure in the past 40 years that either company has put on anyone to buy chips.

I've got a Raspberry Pi running Ubuntu Linux and I find it a bit annoying that some software packages aren't supported. Don't forget, the Pi is probably the most widely supported ARM-based system outside of phones, and even there I can get the occasional issue.

I can't even imagine how much frustration there'd be trying to run stuff on that thing.
