Budget (£1000):

Country: UK

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Blender, Unreal Engine / Unity

Greetings LLT Forum

Does anyone have any experience with game dev on a £1000 laptop?

This is something I am trying to get into, but my current setup is a 6 year old MacBook Pro and its not upto the task of anything past Safari, running the Unreal 3rd Person demo is around 5fps, Unity crashes when adding a terrain object and the blender performance is ......... I think you get the idea.

My budget is around £1000, I don't know where to focus my search, I not looking for balls to the wall performance but am looking for something that can at least run some 3D engines with workable performance

Any advice would be great, thanks

Unity is not a very demanding engine, so I you should be pretty with 3000 gen Ryzen, or 9th/10th gen intel and 16GB of Ram.
When it comes to blender, it benefits greatly from L3-Chache size and single core performance for physic simulations. So I'd recommend at least 16mb L3-Chache for the CPU.
Depending on the platform (Oculus, Windows, iOS, Android) you can check minimum requirements.
For example:

I am using unity and blender too, and was up until recently using the following hardware:
CPU i5-7400
RAM 16GB (4x4) 2400mHz
GPU GTX 1060 6GB
Storage 1TB combined storage
The programms worked really well, CPU got a little slow for my taste, but the system was absolutely fine for development.
