Hi guys!

I have recently decided to upgrade my system. I currently use it for browsing the net, some coding, virtual meetings, light gaming (Valorant/MC) and video/photo editing.

It was a budget build of mine which consists of:

CPU: Ryzen 3 1200
GPU: Galax OC GTX 1060 6GB

RAM: Klevv Boltx 2X16GB, 3000MHz
MOBO: PRIME B350M-A

PSU: Corsair CX550M
Storage: SanDisk 240GB 2.5" SSD & Seagate 1TB 3.5" HDD

Cooling: Hyper 212 LED CPU Air Cooler & 4 chassis fans

I am currently looking to upgrade my CPU to a Ryzen 5 3600. Not looking to upgrade my GPU right now.
What else should I upgrade within a budget of $400 USD?

Thank you in advance!

Upgrade your board to a b450 cause i think there were some issues with these first gen chipsets, not to mention having no support for ryzen 5000

Maybe upgrade storage abit cause 240gb is not that much storage

Otherwise seems ok though i do suggest overclocking the ram to 3200 or 3600mhz

The 3600 is a good price/performance cpu! I'd personally look, if the motherboard will support this cpu or if you'll need to do a bios-update. And if it doesn't fit, b450 boards are easy to get right now.

I personally would upgrade to a M.2 drive, maybe a 500GB WD Black Sn750 or Samsung 970 Evo Plus. They can be had for 60-70$ and your system should run faster and a bit safer with cache in the better SSD's.

Cooler and RAM is fine, looks like a solid build to me!

Would this be good for a MOBO, GIGABYTE B450M DS3H AM4 AMD B450

Just thinking about statistics, I also worry about how that old motherboard will react to win11 requirements as well.  I don’t know that it won’t work, as I haven’t really looked into win11 compatibility myself, but lately win11 compatibility seems to be a prime issue of concern. It seems to be Something to consider generally for the future.   There are a lot of people making fun of win11 atm, but I suspect that like basically every other win version before it there will be big bugs to iron out but they will likely be ironed out eventually, and it will become what one more or less has to run if one wants to run windows.  It could become an 8.0 or an ME, but it seems unlikely.  Of course it also seemed unlikely with 8.  The board seems built for 1st gen ryzen mostly, which is a known verboten thing, so there will be many people getting rid of them along with their gen1 ryzen CPUs (and them then being turned into Linux boxes) which means fewer around for people to find issues with. it seems to me that if there are unknown win11 problems to be had in the future with the components you list, that board is the most likely place for them to be. 1060 may be an issue too, but there are so many of those around, that any issues will likely be found and fixed fast.  That board though may have lurking problems that are found more slowly and maybe never fixed even if it technically has the stuff to run win11

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

I’ve heard of the board.  I don’t remember if it was bad or good, but it was near the top of the most popular for some time on PCPartpicker so I suspect there will be a lot of them around.
