Editing off a server.

So i have a plan for a server rack thats about 22u tall. One of the servers i plan on having in it is a NAS. I plan on hooking up a 10g sfp+ connection to it between my nas and my main tower. The idea is to edit off of it. I dont plan on having 200gb size files or somthing but i was wondering whats the minimum bandwidth you would recommend for this task?

is there any cpu bottle necks i should consider? I was planning on throwing in either some reasonably cheap amd cpu or intel server chip.

My plan is an all ssd nas ( i hate hard drivesand avoid if i can help it). Prob sata ssds since i have no idea how i would do a nvme ssd array for this kind of a task. The idea is atleast 8 if not 16 drives (using 2 sas/sata hba.) I since i will be editing off of them i was planning on using a zfs solution. Mabey proxmox or somthing.

And yes i am aware this is crazy stupid but i have an addiction to storage and i need to fill it.

No idea what case im using but since they will be sata ssd i can just double side tape every thing worst case.

What footage are you editing?

For low bitrate stuff, you won't need much, basically any nas will work fine.

cpu won't really matter here, its just moving packets over the network, not processing the video at all.

How much storage do you need? Whats your budget?

Id probably go hdds here, fine for most uses, and much cheapest per tb.

Your plan for all SSD and 10Gb wired is good.

Look at TrueNAS and UnRaid as software solutions for making the shares while using ZFS.

Mount your drives properly, don't just stick them to things.

I do plan to but i think its a funny thought. i remember seeing a build done on ltt where there was like 4 of the things taped together.

1440 or 4k  stuff mabey ( depends if i have good moniters by this point)

Im not really setting a budget. It will depend on how crazy i wanna go with it.

I REALLY hate hard drives. I have one 4tb external for backing up some stuff atm  (but plan to replace at some point).
I just dont really trust them. Also they are big and heavy and power hogs.

what bitrate? Resolution doesn't really matter here for the nas and network

Do you mind a used/new rack server? You can get them with 24 2.5in pcie bays on the front, so you can use nvme drives.

What network switch and solution are you using?

again im not sure. mabey 3500 or 6k if i remember correctly Its been a while

im hoping for 8tb at least but would be nice for more then that.

if i can find it cheap enough mabey. The thing abotu the nvme drives im not sure how that would go as the only ones i see are in a m.2 format.

Im sort of debating atm. it might just be just from my nas to my pc with a solid copper cable or i might get a switch and do the while network up like that. i havnt decided yet.

Thats nothing bitrate wise, you won't need much at all for that. GIgabit network will be fine too.

8tb isn't that much, you can almost do that  in a single drive now.

Do you have a budget in mind.

Id really go hdds to save a buck here, you won't need the performance here.

Again it's about high speed storage.  Not an insane amount of storage. I'm perfectly aware we can get 8 or 10 or 14 tb drives easy. I dont care for them because of reasons stated earlyer. It's not quite about practicality it's about somthing cool while having a use. I may make a vault nas at some point but for now I wanna stick with this.

And like I said no I dont. I hate thinking about that kind of stuff. Most of this thing I would get over time then the drives all at once so lots of flexibility.

So what you do you want help picking here? Basically any gigabit nas will meet your needs here.

If you want simple, id just get a synology nas. Super easy to use, good software

If you want custom, id get a used rack server like a dell r520 and start filling it will drives. as needed. You can also go custom built, but the rack servers are much easier to work with and better build, I don't see a good reason to for most uses.

Yes i wanna go custom. I have a few cases in mine.  I was just curious that if i had to go rj45 befor i go sfp if i would have any trouble. And wether i should think about what cpu i should be using in relation to the eventually amount of bandwidth being used. (This thing will also replace my external more or less.)

Simple is boring. It dosnt line up with my obsession at all.

Also for the record i dont wanna think about price because prices change alot all the time up here in canada.

What cases are you looking at? Id probably get something like a supermicro case. Pretty nice to work with, good hotswap bays.

Won't matter, Im a fan of sfp+ as its more flexable, and lower power + fiber cables are more capable in the future, and often cheaper too.

CPU performance won't matter here, anything here semi modern is fine. Its not processing video, just moving packets over the network.

This mabey.

And yes one of the reasons i want sfp is that on the chance i go all sfp then the switch wont sound obnoxious or take an obscene amount of power as far as i know.

Id get a supermicro case here instead. You get hot swap bays, and just far better build quality. I have a case like this, and its just not great.

All the 10gb switches run pretty hot now, id just wait if you want low power switches.

If you don't have >2 10gbe devices id just run a direct link to the client.

Ya as cool as it would be to be mostly fiber its prob not practical atm. This rack will be in the room i sleep in.

The thing is most of those super micro cases are insanly expensive.

Might consider this though.

Once i put this together and confirm it works i mostlikly wont take it apart again for a long time so hotswap bays arnt anything im super interested in. Though i have a work around if i decide to get some.

24. bays for ssds, swap in your own board if you want and it will work fine.

unfortunatly that dosnt ship to canada but i will deff consider ebay listings. I am not above getting used hardware. thats how i plan on doing the 10g sfp goodness.

I think you mean switch right?

Also If you want to save a buck skip the switch. It won't let you connect any more 10gbe device than a direct link.

ill need a switch any ways so if i end up having this i still get a bit of the look i wanted.
